Not sure if this is a good place to put this but since it involves a NBS Tahoe I figured what the hell.
Between my Hurst shifter and NV4500 transmission sits a 3/8" spacer made of a piece of metal with rubber molded to it. It's an OEM part but it doesn't seem to survive more than a year. I think the reason it doesn't last long is that the rubber portion of the spacer has slightly larger holes than the metal portion and is designed to have a bushing sleeve fit from the shifter mount itself to the rubber helping hold them in place. For some reason, this Hurst shifter doesn't have the same diameter holes so the sleeve cannot be added thus leaving a space around the bolt allowing some movement when installed. That minor movement coupled with bang shifting wears the rubber out quickly, loosens the shifter, and lets oil leak all over the place.
I would like to remake this spacer using something more rigid, oil resistant, and having the correct sized holes to eliminate any possible movement. My question is what would you guys make it out of? I could probably get a sheet of steel and cut one out then use RTV between the surfaces to help reduce unwanted metal on metal vibration noises but drilling the steel would suck, as would cutting the shifter hole out. I was thinking possibly I could use some sort of plastic that would reduce vibrations yet be rigid enough not to tear and not melt with the oil exposure.
