First off thanks for everyone on this forum for the help. Steven, I’ve given the part number for just the key, but they say it’s tied to J03, and I am needing J10. Any idea what the part number is for that key?

I’ve been dealing with multiple dealers on trying to get a key, but none of them have the right type key. I’ve tried part number 84835038, which I’m told is a luck of the draw on what key it is. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated

I just heard back from GM after telling them to call the dealership that the prior posted mentioned who knows how to order a key. They are only selling the following 4 keys at this time: J03, J06, J08, and J10

The part number is 86797471 and the dealer needs to specify what key you want -- hopefully one of the 4 listed above.

I had to talk to GM for 2 months to get them to figure out how to do this and it resulted in them having to all Chris Garner at John Heister Chevrolet in Lillington, NC -- if your local dealership cannot get you a key then you should call Chris Garner as he seems to be one of the few dealers around who knows how to get these keys. Even GM corporate did not know how and had to call Chris per the prior poster's info to solve it. GM corporate told me they are going to get this information to the dealerships so no one else will have to go through this hassle.

We bought our GMC Yukon XL in late November. It came with a roof rack installed (along with a few other dealer installed "options"). A week after purchase, I realized we had the wheel lock key, but not the rood rack key. I contacted the dealership (to remain un-named for now) and it took a while to get an answer... But eventually they said they would "mail the key". Nothing came in 2-3 weeks. Called a few more times, but this was around the holidays, nothing happened. Finally reached out to someone higher in the dealership in early February, they asked for the # on the roof rack and reported they would order keys from GMC and then have them shipped to me. Still have nothing, and have now left 2 messages with him without a return call. I plan to call back one more time today and see if I can get any updates... I thought there might be a delay on the keys? Who knows?

Either way, my question is where do I go next? Is there someone to talk to at GMC? Is there a best way to do that?

Thanks for any help! Have some trips planned for the summer and want to get this ironed out...
ok, just had the same problem with roof rack keys for mine, code J06.
spoke to a great parts guy,
any dealer can look up the code 86797471 and click on the key and you will have several choices of keys. mine is a J06 so the key code was 86797474.
it is a manufacturer direct ship to dealer. ( he could not find the manufacturer)
i googles the part number and the website gmpartsstore.com had my key in stock for 10.95.
good luck to you key hunters, hope this helps

bought a set off marketplace and no key. Called first 2 dealers, nothing. Called the 3rd with the referenced part number and he did a little more digging for my j10 lock. Gave me this part number only good for j10 86797469. He said I’d have to order it in person though and there’s a key cutting fee of $20. I wasn’t near the dealer so I googled the part number and it came up. So I ordered it. We will see

I don't think they actually make any replacement keys based on the number of people on here having issues getting them. I called two dealerships - one told me they were on backorder. I called the online parts deparment twice and both people seemed clueless about replacement keys even though the FAQ section states you can get a key.

I then went and emailed the head of GM Mary Barra this morning after wasting countless hours trying to find a replacement key at a dealership and their online parts store. I was shocked when I just got a call back from someone in their executive offices and they said they would get to the bottom of this and get me a replacement key. I even sent a link to this forum to show them that this has been a constant problem for years for numerous people and that it is ridiculous that they are not providing replacement keys when Thule and Yakima offer them. I expressed my disappointment that I had spent $545 on the rails only to face the possibility of having to have the cylinders drilled out. I will let you all know what the resolution is.
What’s her email address. I’d like to send one myself

What is the main issue here? Are the racks already installed and they need to be moved?

As someone who carries a lot of gear I definitely see the need for roof racks and the ability to move or remove them. Plus the advantage of attaching parts to load different types of sporting equipment.

I chose to go aftermarket and went with Thule. The quality and customer support is great although they are way more expensive than the GM. It’s unfortunate that GM doesn’t have the customer support for this but hopefully you guys will get them to notice how important gear carrying accessories are.

They cancelled my order for my key. Anybody have a J10 they would be willing to copy and ship?

Hey, if this thread is still alive, I just went to install my racks and it looks like all four of my locks are completely frozen, I broke off a key trying to use a hammer to free up the lock. Trip is tomorrow, of course. looks like no Surfboard this trip.

But quite an issue with These $500 racks that are paper weights now.

Looking for new cylinder and key to see if I can repair or purchase another set on FB market place. Thanks GM!!

Facebook marketplace for the win. $100 almost exact , (looks like Amazon purchase) cross bar roof racks with locks ( 4 keys this time, lol) instead of 2. Assembled and mounted. So far, would reccomend.

Bumping up an old thread, if y'all don't mind too much, but wanted to give props to this thread in helping me to solve my cross bar key dilemma. :Big Laugh:

New-to-my-wife 2021 Premier came with cross bars, but of course no key. Found this thread and ordered part #86797472, J08 keys from Chevrolet Parts Direct, aka. Parkway Chevrolet in Tomball, TX. Ordered two at the cost of $28.96 all in with shipping and tax. Turns out quantity of one when ordering means a pair of keys, so now I have four. LOL!

Just got the keys a few minutes ago and haven't tried removing the cross bars yet, just checked that they work in the locks. At least the latch opens. Hopefully the bars aren't too stuck on there or need any special activities to get off. I'd imagine they would just lift off, but nothing ever seems too straightforward when I try to do something seemingly simple. o_O
