Good morning y’all! New to this forum, but figured I better get some expert advice as my Tahoe starting to become more vintage.

I just had a check engine light come on a couple days ago. Not experiencing any performance or mechanical issues with the vehicle. Took it into the dealership service center for diagnostic check. Recommendation came back as you need to replace the catalytic converter and that’ll cost $4900.

I’m curious to hear from those of you with experience replacing a catalytic converter, even a dealership labor rates, does this sound like reasonable cost for parts and labor?

Location plays a big role on cost for a converter. So where are you located?

But first what was/were the codes? How many miles are on the Tahoe and does it burn oil? If it still runs good/normal my guess is a lazy oxygen sensor.

Located in Southern California. Code is P0420 or as advisor called it, “the dreaded P0420” code. 170K miles on the odometer and not burning oil. Runs fine and not behaving irregular in any way. Appreciate the advice.

you should be able to get a aftermarket catco or eastern installed for about $650, maybe a little more but under $800 if they are asking more keep shopping

P0420..cat inefficiency code for down stream O2 sensor.

check rock auto for replacement rear O2 sensor before replacing the Y-Pipe.

And actually replacing the Y-pipe can be done in less than an hour if you have access to a lift.

I had to drop my Y-pipe when I replaced my torque converter.

yes we all hope it is a funky sensor since that is a much cheaper option, but that's super rare. saying a p0420 is a 02 sensor code is incorrect. A bad 02 sensor in this case would be like p0141 or other variety's depending on the functional failure.

Being in SoCal may be an issue, they’ll want OEM or CARB-approved aftermarket with an EO (if it exists).

Otherwise would be a great excuse to get long tube headers and a catted Y-pipe

i stand corrected..P0420 code on a Chevy Tahoe indicates that theBank 1 catalytic converter (driver's side) is operating below efficiency threshold. While often signaling a failed catalytic converter, it is frequently caused by downstream oxygen sensor issues, exhaust leaks, or engine issues like oil consumption.

I would usually see this on the non-cated exhaust, due the rear O2 thinking it was too lean.

The rear O2 not a "Full" wide band sensor, it is a resistance check based on the amount of unburnt fuel passing the
sensor post combustion. but surprisingly my 'Hoe, the rear O2 are 4 wires, same number of wires as the front O2
sensor. So GM abit different then the import car manufacturers, 2 wire rear O2 sensors.

in the early 2000s, when i was running dyno shop, mostly ricer burners, we would see this code when we replace the
factory turbo back catted exhaust with non-catted exhaust with no tune. At least until the vehicle was "tuned" for the exhaust & the code was
"shut off".
