We bought our GMC Yukon XL in late November. It came with a roof rack installed (along with a few other dealer installed "options"). A week after purchase, I realized we had the wheel lock key, but not the rood rack key. I contacted the dealership (to remain un-named for now) and it took a while to get an answer... But eventually they said they would "mail the key". Nothing came in 2-3 weeks. Called a few more times, but this was around the holidays, nothing happened. Finally reached out to someone higher in the dealership in early February, they asked for the # on the roof rack and reported they would order keys from GMC and then have them shipped to me. Still have nothing, and have now left 2 messages with him without a return call. I plan to call back one more time today and see if I can get any updates... I thought there might be a delay on the keys? Who knows?

Either way, my question is where do I go next? Is there someone to talk to at GMC? Is there a best way to do that?

Thanks for any help! Have some trips planned for the summer and want to get this ironed out...

New or used? If new, someone needs to pony up. Maybe start climbing the org chart at the dealer until you get someone responsible enough to get involved. Used, might take longer since they may say it “lost” now. Same process though.

I have a set of cross bars with the code j01 and I can’t find the keys, is there anyway I can get a key replacement somewhere?

On the official Chevrolet accessories website FAQ:

Q: What happens if I lose the key that locks and unlocks my roof rack cross rails?

A: You can visit your dealer and reference your roof rack cross rail lock code to obtain a replacement key.

I don't think they actually make any replacement keys based on the number of people on here having issues getting them. I called two dealerships - one told me they were on backorder. I called the online parts deparment twice and both people seemed clueless about replacement keys even though the FAQ section states you can get a key.

I then went and emailed the head of GM Mary Barra this morning after wasting countless hours trying to find a replacement key at a dealership and their online parts store. I was shocked when I just got a call back from someone in their executive offices and they said they would get to the bottom of this and get me a replacement key. I even sent a link to this forum to show them that this has been a constant problem for years for numerous people and that it is ridiculous that they are not providing replacement keys when Thule and Yakima offer them. I expressed my disappointment that I had spent $545 on the rails only to face the possibility of having to have the cylinders drilled out. I will let you all know what the resolution is.

I appreciate your efforts. I am having the same problems with a J08 key on a 2021 Yukon Denali. The dealership I called here in NC said they would have to send off for a key through a locksmith and that could take 2 weeks. I need this done in the next week because my family and I are going on vacation and need the racks for extra storage. I am taking it to a Locksmith tomorrow. If I have good results I will be sure to post it. Thanks!

Hi - If you want to reach out to GM - they called me again today to say they were looking into it. Someone from their executive referral team reached out to me and you can contact them through this email: [email protected]. I have sent them links to this forum to show them that this is a constant issue.

The other option I think you have is if you can find a dealer with cross rails in stock with a J08 key you can just drive to them and take the key to the locksmith yourself. I tried doing that but didn't have any luck with my local dealership.

I am hoping they can figure out who makes the rails, and then cross reference the keys. When I have a resolution I will be sure to report back to everyone.

Wow thank you for the information. I purchased a certified 2021 Yukon Denali Ultimate from Deacon GMC in Smithfield NC at the first of the year. I had problems from the time I received the vehicle. They only gave me one key for the vehicle when I received it after the paperwork was signed and buying an extended warranty. The finance manager lied to me and told me the transmission fluid never had to be changed after I told him I wanted it changed before I took delivery only to find out when I got home and read the manual that it needed to be changed at 45K miles. I called the dealership to find out it cost over $500 to get it changed. I purchased the vehicle with a little over 45k so you would think that would be completed since it was certified but it was not. I finally got a second key a few weeks ago after complaining and now this! Very frustrating to say the least. I am a Toyota guy and kind of wish I would have gone another direction on this. I love the vehicle and all the features but keys and being lied to have been a huge disappointment. I ordered a set of J08 keys online but they did not fit. I got an appointment tomorrow with a locksmith so hopefully they can get something to work. Thanks again.

UPDATE: I stopped by a Locksmith this morning and after them doing a few things they were unable to get into it. The locksmith advised that he didn't have a key that resembled what goes into the lock. He said he could maybe pick the locks but would not be able to provide a key. I held off for now. I am waiting on another dealership to see if they could provide a solution. I will keep you posted.

johnzillah, glad you got a second key fob, if you look at your certified paperwork the Dealer is required to provide two key fobs among other things(you may want to look at the paperwork and make sure they provided everything). Unfortunately the transmission fluid change is not a requirement. Also check your extended warranty price, Knapp and James Black offer discounted GMPP warranty and not an aftermarket company warranty, not sure what your Dealer sold you. You have so many days to cancel and get a full refund, many buyers on this forum take the discounted price with them when purchasing a vehicle and have the Dealer match the price.

I did get them to undercut Car Edge's warranty price. I was kind of sold on that afterwards. Thanks

I stopped by a local Chevy dealership whom I called a few days ago. I spoke to a different gentleman. I told him my issue and that GM Corporate advised me that I would need to start the process at a dealership first. The gentleman took some time and he asked for the lock code. I told him J08. He said that the part number for the key was 86797472. I am not sure if that relates to the J08 key code only. He advised that he could order me the key and have it to me in about a week for $10. I told him that I needed one in the next three days. He gave me two dealerships that had the key in stock and said they could most likely overnight delivery the key to me. One in Mt. Pleasants SC, and the other in Woodbridge, VA. I contacted the dealership in Mt. Pleasant SC and sure enough they did have the key and has it on the way to me overnight delivery. Hopefully the key will work and this will help others looking for a solution to this.

Hi John, This is great info! I called another dealership with that part number and it is specific to an 08 key just to let everyone else know. I am still pursuing a replacement key and think another dealership might be able to get them for me. The part number did point the dealership in the right direction --here are the part number numbers for J03. I believe it includes a cylinder/lock with it at a cost of $25.... so I am still trying to find just the key. But here are the cylinder part numbers that might include a key in case that is helpful to anyone.

I got a call from Damien from General Motors. He advised that I first needed to stop by a nearby dealership to start the process. He was very nice and willing to help resolve this. I am going to do that Monday Morning. I tried to install a Thule Evolution on the racks but they are too far apart. My friend did some searching for me and it appears the racks are made by YHT Auto. I never heard of them. I am going to try and reach out to them tomorrow and see if I can get a key possibly. See the link below.

UPDATE: I received the J08 Keys for my roof racks and have successfully got access to both rails. You will need both keys to maneuver the racks. Luckily I spoke to the parts Manager Chris Garner at John Hiester Chevrolet in Lillington, NC to figure all of this out for me. I made sure corporate GM knew this because he figured it out in about 5 minutes in what has taken me 3 weeks to get done. These keys came in just in the nick of time. My family and I are off to a 10 day vacation to Marco Island FL and we needed the extra cargo space for the trip. I hope you all have the same results as I did.

thanks for this info -- Chris Garner seems to be one of the very few managers in the country who know how to get keys. I still have not gotten an answer from GM corporate so if it doesn't get resolved I will reach out to him and ask him to mail me a key. Once I have my keys I will be happy to make a few extra copies for anyone else who is in a bind and needs the J03 keys.
