Custom fiberglass speaker pods

Hey guys. Decided it was time to re-do my whole stereo system in the truck. A brief rundown of what I'm gonna be running in my new setup.

-Rockford Fosagte P1 components (2 sets)
-Rockford Fosgate Power T400-4
-Sundown SA-15 in a PWK Designs box (6th order bandpass)
-Kenwood KAC-9104D
-KnuKoncepts wiring and RCA's
-Stinger hardware and distro blocks and fusing

So I got started on my newest project which is going to be a big project but its going to be a lot of fun. I'm building fiberglassed speaker pods which will be home for some new Rockford components. The speaker pods will either be smoothed and painted black or wrapped in black suede. Haven't decided yet.

I'll try to remeber to take lots of pics of the build. But here's a few from todays progress.

What I did was cut some cloth to cover the grills to give me a solid surface. I then coated the grills with resin, layed the cloth down and then poured more resin over the cloth (deff is a messy project). Tomorrow I'll be adding more layers on the inside and outside of the grills. Prolly won't put any fiberglass on the outside, only on the inside. Not sure yet.

So I've made some good progress in the last cpl of days. I'm all done glassing and onto bondo to make things nice and smooth. And I decided I'm gonna wrap them in black suede leather. I did 2 layers on the outside of the grills and I did 3 layers on the inside of the grills so they should be strong. Doesn't look like much right now but it will look a lot better in the next cpl stages when I get some speakers and tweeters mocked up and start cutting some holes.

No worries dude. On your glassed speaker grills you did like I'm doing, did you use 5.25" speakers or 6.5" speakers?

Alright. Yea for sure. I was just curious what size speakers you used because I have 5.25" grills I'm using just as a reference and to make sure my mounting surface is flat an then noticed that the 5.25" grills barely fit and wasn't sure if 6.5" were gonna fit but they should. You made 6.5" speakers fit. How was the fitment on the 6.5"? Tight fit?

It wasnt very tight i made a mdf ring and FG over it to mount the spk. i wanted to flush mount them but the grill wasnt wide enough

Project looks good. Quick question: I noticed you guys are putting the tweeters in the pods vs in the A pillars. Why is that? Does it produce better sound from there?

pillar is better for stage/image usually. different components perform differently, and nobody has the same set of ears so its kind of whatever makes you happy. personally i prefer to have the tweeters higher in the cabin, so typically the pillars are a great location. the bose pillars have the tweeters in about the ideal position for what i like.

Been MIA for a few days, just got back from a vacation. Starting to get things mocked up tonight but I'm not gonna cut any holes till I get my speakers. And I changed things up a little bit. I'm gonna be running Rockford 5.25" T1 components. 2 sets in the front doors and one set in the rear doors. I also got a sneak peak of the new PWK Designs box.

Thanks guys. Got my speakers today. Time to start cutting some holes. I'm also gonna run all new 16ga speaker wire thru the doors because I'm gonna mount my crossovers under the rear seat next to the amps and then its just a short run from the crossovers to the 4-channel amp. I'm gonna make an amp rack with a lid that opens up to check out everything and I'm gonna maybe put a plexi-glas window in the lid so you can see everything when the lid is closed. And I'm gonna throw some neons in there to light it up at night and fans to keep everything cool.

I wouldn't do 6.5's. Just my opinion. Wayyyyy too tight of a fit. I was gonna do 2 sets of 6.5's also and they were not gonna fit. The mock ups I did that is in the pic with the circles of the speakers, those are circles for 5.25" speakers. Barely fits. One thing to keep in mind is a 5.25" speaker with the grill is 6.25" overall diameter and a 6.5" speaker with a grill is 7.5" overall diameter.
