Changing Steering Speed Sensor

the steering sensor or the ps solenoid actuator may be broke or unplugged. the system does have trouble codes for just the steering but you need access to a tech2 or other specialized scanner.

I looked under the hood of my 00 Tahoe I didn't see any wires coming off the pump. I did see the sensor on the steering shaft. Does this mean I don't have steering assist? Is there a way to test it before I just replace it?

i have a snap on computer scanner, (almost 4,000) but no codes came up, the only thing waqs, transmission components slipping.... im still bewildered...

can it communicate with manufacturer specifc modules it does not exactly work like sae obd2 compliance. the codes will be C04xx codes for the steering system. you have to search for the module in the scanner if your adapters and software allows.

(First time post but avid reader)

Scared myself then my wife in the first week we had our S-T-O-C-K 99 4dr tahoe. Not good feeling @ hwy speed or 45 in 4-lane with heavy traffic. Did the research several times here and other places but Pics got me to register for this site. Thank you for a place to figure this stuff out!!!

Thank you VERY much to Fyremanpat for pics and others for the notes about the "foam tape" and the "green tab". With this info, I waded in and had it done in about 30min. Drove much better after swap. Issue resolved!

Now to get some exhaust on this thing... Cover up the fact the CD player quit :)

Anyone care to change mine? I am taking it on this weekend. May remove my driver seat since I am a big guy....

RedCrush I'm almost 300 lb and I got to mine its tight but you can get it. The wires were real short which makes it tough but the foam wrapping was the worst part of it.

Really been having trouble with my steering on my 99 tahoe. Replaced my pump 3 times, just replaced the gear box a couple weeks ago and as well as my whole front end. Messed with my toe and camber as well. When I'm in park or at a stop my wheels are very hard to turn. I have to literally use both of my hands to turn my wheels, which has led to me busting my ragjoint already. I finally read up on this steering sensor and I'm hoping it fixes it. Did anyone have this kind of problem before replacing it? Don't want to get my hopes up and lose my more money doing this. I'm also running 35s on 6inch lift. Don't know if tthat's a problem as well. Any feedback would be great. Thanks

I didn't have any of those problems. My Tahoe would wander at highway speed. The sensor cured my problem.

There are some better pumps and gears available to purchase for a setup up such as yours but they do cost more of course. Could always delete the EVO function as well. No clogged or kinks lines I presume?

Wire location?

Hey guys,found this forum looking for a fix to my steering issues. After reading up I decide replace the Steering Speed Sensor on my 99 yukon. Picked up one at the auto part store for 40 bucks. When I took the old one off it was not plugged into anything and the retaining clips are gone. So i looked around for the other side of the wire hooks up but cant find it anywhere. Any clues is it on the steering column , does it plug into the harness or something? Any help would be appreciated. I would even run new wires if I knew where they went. Thanks

So after inspecting thing this morning there are no wires on the pump or steering box. I am at a lost of how this the sensor could even interface with the components. The last own did an engine swap maybe the all the steering was swapped too.

went back and looked from the bottom side of truck and there is wires connected to the pump. still cant find any hook ups in the cab though. Any body got a wiring diagram of the harness to the wheel? Thinking may be I can just splice in to it.

99 4WD Suburban Steering Too Easliy

Thanks for the good information. The sensor fixed the problem of too much power steering on the burb - rotating the steering column so that the nut was pointing down was helpful and O'Reillys had a replacement for $39! Tough to get the connectors unplugged and plugged again but it's just patience.

I used the Dorman part from Rock Auto DORMAN Part # 905510 {#26064468} 22.79 They have two of the same part. One was a couple bucks more expensive. I called Dorman and they said they were the same part so I ordered the cheaper one.

I disconnected the battery as I read it would ensure not triggering the Airbag on accident. I also turned the wheel slightly left to get the 15mm bolt pointing straight down. Something else that would have helped is knowing that the connector was a bit different and had a green tab that needed to be pulled back and not just push down on it. The wiring is tight but it will give you access.
I replaced mine last year and it's already giving me problems again. Do you know why it would fail again so quickly?

Once they go out, they will continue to go out. You just don't know "when". The fix is to convert to the 1996 setup and eliminate the speed senor completely. It's not very hard to do. A faulty sensor can be dangerous. Ask my family about the their ride through the Tail of the Dargon with a bad sensor. Yikes!!

I didn't read through the whole thread but there is a GM part to eliminate the system. GM gave up on the system and the only fix they had for it is to eliminate it with a fitting for the back of the pump.https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-926-049-Steering-Cadillac-Chevrolet/dp/B07YYWH29W Here's the Dorman version

Eman- look at the differences between switching to a 96 system or using the GM bypass. My money is on 96 system. Pump and pressure line.
