Went to change the oil on my wife's new 07 escalade AWD the other day and our driveway has a slight slope to it. As soon as the front tires came off the ground it started rolling down the hill. None of the 2wd will do this so it surprised me. Be sure to set your E brake!

that's weird my 2012 awd doesn't do that, if I jack up the front the front wheels spin freely. to me that sounds more like a transmission problem like you have lost park.
I don't think the front wheels are supposed to do the "parking"
The front wheels did spin freely but did not spin the driveshaft. Now I'm curious if the awd transfer case is working properly.
they wont spin the driveshaft when parked, the driveshaft will spin them if it is in drive

awd do this. all 4 tires need to be on the ground for it not to roll

Me 3. Just changed my oil yesterday and truck did not roll backwards when jacked up from the front.
my old nbs only did that once, that was after the transmission had broke and the tow truck driver had pulled it up on a flatbed type truck, put it in park, let off the brake and it just rolled right back off the truck, I thought it was rather bizarre tow truck driver said sometimes there is a mechanism inside that breaks and that's what happens.

if its in park it shouldnt roll, the parking pawl should stop it. if that was the case then u would need to use the E brake everytime u park
As it was rolling backwards, the front tires were turning forward which tells me that the transfer case is indeed just like an open differential.

well I just went out and tested mine by jacking it up in the front with my truck backed into the driveway (so the front is facing downhill) and sure enough it rolled, so maybe there isn't anything wrong with yours after all. kind of ******* weird considering if I jack up the front on a level surface the front wheels spin free

just to make sure i understand, your yukon was parked like the pickup in your sig, u jacked the front and it rolled forward? did it roll a little or a lot like u think it wouldnt have stopped?

Remember there have been a few different AWD tcases over the years. Starting in 2007 (iirc) they changed from viscous coupling to planetary gear type. The planetary gear tcases act just like an open differential, think of the front and rear driveshaft like the driver and passenger axles coming out of the rear diff; they will spin in opposite directions even with the trans in Park.
My 2008 Sierra Denali had the planetary gear tcases and would also roll if I jacked the front or rear up on a steep surface.
I think there may have been another update around the 2011ish timeframe but don't quote me on that.
I would NOT trust the ebrake to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Make sure you properly chock the tires.

Correct^^^^^. My 02 has the viscous coupling and it won't roll with the front off the ground. I block the tires regardless and so should anybody else though, that's common sense.
