Backup Camera Install

I bought a Pioneer Appradio this week, and decided to tackle the install myself after the two shops I called wanted more than the unit cost to install it! So when the parts come in I'm on it.

The radio has a plugin for a backup cam. I looked around and found one sold at Walmart of all places for $25 that gets very good reviews all around the web. My question is where do I install the actual camera to get the best view? It has rings to adjust for tilt, but where does it need to go to get the whole picture?

If you aren't worried about getting your hitch in i found the best place for mine was under the bottom of the rear gate. Got the idea from 05nali.

^^^damn missing license plate screw... I have had no problems with this location. Perfect for everyday use and backing into my trailer

I have the keyhole style cam.

See the squarish hole right above the receiver? (random google pic) I cut a metal plate and covered that and put my cam in it so it's flush mounted. Works perfect for me.

I was thinking about doing the same thing, do you have a pic of yours? Did you weld the plate on?

no pic, but I'll see if I can get one for you. I've never seen what other cams look like but I could see the very tip of ball on my hitch so it was awesome hooking up my boat.

Really easy. cut plate to fit hole. drill hole in the plate for cam. run wires through hole and tighten cam to plate. Then weld it on. Just make sure you take your time welding so it doesn't get too hot.

I was scared at first because If I ever needed to do something to the cam I'd be grinding the plate off, but in 2 years it's been fine.

dang, i want to install a backup cam on my truck too. i'm not too good with stereo installs. Each time i've done work (old honda civic) i always end up with a whole bunch of extra screws or broken clips haha. How hard do you think it is to run the wires? let me know if you have some install tips or pictures to route the wires.

took me about an hour total to hook mine up. it's not very hard.

I have the license plate cam and wasn't hard to install at all. I usually bring my electronic stuff to a shop but that was easy and only took me about 15 minutes. I'll post up pics tomorrow

How did y'all run the wires? Thinking about pulling the trigger on a camera while I'm staring at the wires.

I installed mine where the button for the back glass was located. i took it out and cut the hole to size for the camera and installed it so its flush. not real good for seeing the hitch, but its good for backing up in general being that its mounted higher up.

^this, have mine the same way

pulled over and ticketed for limo tint
cop didnt say one thing

pulled over with a warning for no front plate
and the cop told me it was illegal and need to take it off

mounted mine in my plate as well..my plate is beat up and i will need to get a new one at some point, i wanted to mount it above the receiver, but didnt have the tools to do it here at school..works just fine in the plate, just make sure to mount it in the middle enough so it clears into the opening behind the plate..
