anyone running an open element intake on their TBI?

i have a 95' Yukon and really love the look/sound of the open element intake... i know there isnt much perf. gain if any but i love the way it cleans up the engine bay. long time reader but this is my first post.

ive been searching and havent really found a definitive answer to this question. Do you just have to buy a flat air cleaner base? do you need a throttle body spacer?

any help would be much appreciated...

No throttle body spacer needed. Just buy the assembly and put it in. Very straight forward. You can get one at any auto part store....

yes, it sounds pretty straight forward but on the tbi it has a couple issues that need to be addressed.

1)it has two studs that connect to the aircleaner instead of 1 like on a carb
2)most (if not all) aircleaners you buy from the auto parts store say they only fit either squarebore or round bore carbs.
3) I've read on the forum that if you buy the wrong kind of base you will have clearance problems.

just need some clarification

I believe there are adapters to correct the dual stud issue. You should not run into clearance issues. Auto parts stores should be able to find what you want just based on you year. You can also get what you want on stylin trucks website. It's been years since I've had my 95 so it's possible that production of said parts are harder to find, though

I have a 1 inch drop base, 14x4 filter, 14 inch X-treme flow top. You don't need to address the dual stud issue, there is a threaded hole for the single stud. You can get all-thread at the local hardware store and cut it to length. It'll need to be bent which you can do by hand.

well, went to the pick-a-part today and found exactly what i was looking for. i went to the auto parts store and picked up an edlebrock assembly and found that there was a clearance issue but i just drove down to the junk yard and picked up an air cleaner base that had less of a drop and it fit perfectly

That hose coming off the exhaust manifold, you can just take it off and throw it away or throw it in a box and save it. You dont need it, unless you have emissions then youll have to put your stock intake back on. It wont pass having that type of setup FYI.

But never the less. looks good. im a firm believer in the Volant intakes for the TBIs, that is if you can afford one. Great gain over stock, pulls in all cold air etc etc..
I bought one brand new, used it for a couple hundred miles, loved it to death, then sold it because of the whipple and their intake is different. Then ended up buying another one since i loved the first one so much.. so that ones chillin in a box until i need it

I just flipped my stock air cleaner lid over done. Then took the tube and air box out

out of curiosity though, what exactly does it do? im under the impression that when sitting at idle is recirculates the air back in the system... is that about right?

Are you asking about the Volant here? The Volant is just a CAI.

helps keep the emissions low by taking the hot air off the manifolds and into your air intake.. dont ask lol Dumb as hell, but its always something with those emission and **** ass California laws..

It's not for emissions, it keeps the internal baffle closed to not pull in so much cold air when it's first started. When the manifold heats up the hot air comes up that tube and closes the baffle.

yess huhhh, people with volants wont pass emissions/smog inspections if they live in California and other states and dont have that tube hooked up..
