Am I Good?

I just put a new transmission in my '04 with 148K miles and I'd like to judge if my Motor is strong enough to plan some of road fun. I have the valve noise that seems typical, although Id like to quiet that down. Other than compression check Im wondering if the group has recomendations on how to best judge the health of my Motor and what typical upgrades i might consider.
