Air Intake Upgrades

There is just about never a time when a mod goes smooth...Had a fun time upgrading LED's (posted on interior) and putting in K&N FIPK and Airaid TBS. Naturally they are not made to work together...To make it work together, you have to changed out the two front bolts to extended studs, just as the rear one...all I can say is that ACE really is the place. No other store had what I needed, not ever specialty bolt shops. #6 1.0 2-1/2"

probably thinks a waste of money? I had a 2007 z71 tahoe and installed one, before any other mods just to see if I could tell a difference. To me, these things help throttle response more than anything, you can feel it as soon as you touch the gas.

you know, if i take the stock airbox cover off my 97, it looks just like most of these "cold air" kits. I doubt they are even worth the few hundred dollars people pay for them. I don't think the 96-99 intake piping is that restrictive.

Now the exhaust manifolds on the other hand...

Intakes do add Power but only coupled with other performance modifications , Have you ever seen High HP built vehicles with stock air boxes ???

I've always been a fan of more warm air vs not enough cool air.

that particular k&n was not designed to accommodate tb spacers. The ducting will already like be up against the hood liner. Adding a tb spacer wont help any thing in your case much it but may make the abrasion on the hood liner worse over time. The oem is restrictive and kits like k&n smooth out the airflow and reduce the resistance to air flowing down the tb. The tb spacer will just aggravate the airflow again for it to only be smoothed out again in the plenum going to the runners where the fuel is actually added on a vortec. So therefore the spacer technically can effect airflow negatively and the engine can not benefit by atomizing the fuel better since the fuel is added downstream.

Thanks for the info...should have asked around before purchasing. The duct is definitely rubbing the hood and my concern right now. I may cut out the area of liner that is in contact. I dont drive it every day, so not a huge concern, but still a concern.

I have not gotten around to it yet but I am considering putting replaceable square foot's of fire retardant hood liners where it rubs.

I have that same intake and mine doesnt rub but it is definately close...

Think about tweak the box to help it too. or find thinner rubber isolator mounts so it is closer to the wheel well and farther form the roof. Hood hinge bumps it to when moving the hood.

my truck came with the throttle body spacer and the top of the K&N cold air does touch the hood when closed, but it's not much. I want to put a cowl induction hood on eventually anyway.

For the new body style trucks Air Raid makes a molded intake tube. The belief is the air box on the trucks from the factory are very good and a replacement is not needed. So for $100 or so you get the MIT tube and retain your stock ditching the factory intake tube and resonators. Is there a similar option for the GMT400?
