Cant figure this out the belt on my truck has been making a squeak for a while. Ive changed literally almost every accessory drive on the truck. If I change the belt the squeak will disappear for approx 500-800 miles. I have been under the impression something is slow leaking and contaminating the belt? I have no other ideas at this point. When i first got the truck it was leaking coolant from every spot possible (if anyone saw my last threat about my repairs lol). I noticed the squeak came back within 50~ miles before i replaced the crazy leaking radiator. Once I sealed the coolant system the squeak will stay gone for like i said approx 500-800 miles.

Any ideas? Im lost here hoping some of you guys here can help me figure this out. it just sounds awful

New Tensioner (replaced 2x to make sure)
New alternator
New A/C compressor
New Idler pulley
New Water pump

Only original parts are P/S pump and crank pulley.

Since the power steering pump is original, it may not be your issue, but see if the pump shaft is flush with the pulley flange. It requires a close tolerance to keep the pulley alignment.

Take a strip of sandpaper and hold it on the belt while its running... takes the glaze off the belt. No long hair, jewelry or ling sleeve shirts tho and be careful ....squealing will instantly stop.

Cut the belt. That will stop the squealing too

Seriously though, don’t cut the belt. Try what Galante said.

Great suggestion, a paint paddle with some fine paper wrapped tightly on the end, maybe best and safe place would be @ alternator pulley. JMHO and good luck.
David g....:)

ok i went and verified the clearance on the P/S pump pulley. if your diagram is right the pulley has definitely walked itself out over the years. cant even see the pump shaft i had to feel for it. its a good half inch out. so i guess its that time. i know these are a real pain to do on these trucks also. r.i.p.

truck is on its 3rd belt i ruled out defective belt a while ago. im gonna replace the pump / pulley and then the belt. if the squeak comes back i will try the sand paper idea. i have heard of these cheapo autozone belts causing squeaking. im going to go all out and go gator back lol

i did wire brush all the accessory drive pulleys including crank pulley before installing new belts in the past already. never actually tried sand paper the surface hmmm.

edit: just ordered 2 new gator back belts lol lets see how this works after the pump install

Just use a pulley puller/installer and push it back on. You’ll hear a difinitive “pop” sound when it’s set in place.

Agreed, I’d just reseat the pulley and not worry about a new pump. It really sounds like someone did work in there and never got it seated all the way on.

just wanted to thank everyone for the proper guidance here. it turns out the p/s pump pulley was causing it! I had a shop push it back on and the squeak went away instantly. i would do it myself i dont have the tool. im mechanically inclined and i would really never of thought the pulley could walk its way out that far. from what i know those pulleys usually pop into place once they are seated which is weird how it walked about a half inch out :hmm::hmm:.
