Just wondering what the difference is between the 5.3 in my 02 Tahoe and the LS1 in my brother in laws Trans AM. Just trying to learn more about these engines. Is there a good resource online where I can study up on these motors??

LS1 is an aluminum block vs the 5.3 (LM7) iron block. Accessory brackets are different. Main difference aside from the block material is the heads, cam, and intake system. The shorter runners on the LS1 intakes are tuned for higher rpm whereas the longer intake runners on the truck intakes provide more low-end torque.

cubes are different, 5.3 is a 323 and the 5.7 is 346 iirc.

Yep, those are the correct numbers. Some websites and parts vendors refer to the 5.3 as a 325, but it's definitely not a 327.

I stand corrected, 325.

The Vortec 5300, or LM7/LM4/L59/L33, is a V8 truck engine. It is a stroked (by 9 mm) version of the Vortec 4800 and replaced the 5700 L31. L59 denoted a flexible fuel version, while the LM7 was the standard version of the engine.

Power output is 285-295 hp (213-220 kW) and torque is 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) to 335 lb·ft (454 N·m). Displacement is 5.3 L (5328 cc (325 cu in)) from 96.01 mm bore and 92.00 mm stroke.

LS1, 345.7
The LS1 shares little other than similar displacement, external dimensions, and rod bearings, with its predecessor. It is an all-aluminum 5.7 L (5,665 cc/345.7 cu in) pushrod engine and was rated between 305 - 350 hp (227 to 261 kW) and 335-375 ft·lbf (454-508 N·m) of torque in North America, depending on the application. In Australia, continuous modifications were made to the LS1 engine throughout its lifetime, reaching 382 hp (285 kW) in the HSV's YII series and a Callaway modified version, named C4B, was fitted to HSV GTS models producing 402 hp (300 kW).

If I'm not mistaken...the L33 block is aluminum? I could could be pulling that outa my ass though :shrug:

Edit: Yes it is:

L33

The L33 was an aluminum block version of the LM7, and was referred to as the Vortec 5300 ** in marketing materials. Power increased by 15 hp (11 kW), to 310 hp (230 kW), over the LM7, and torque was unchanged. It was only available on extended cab 4WD pickup trucks.

L33 applications:

* 2005-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD
* 2005-2007 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD

:pepper:

Here's some good info on motors:
