2000 Escalade

The 4wd is acting up. I played with the dash switch, and got it to shift thru all the 4wd selections. (and I can hear the transfer case shift)
When the lights on the selector switch is lit, the button says I am in 4wd, but does not engage the front end.
My question is:
Does this push button selector control the actuator?
Or
Bad Actuator on the front end?
Is the actuator on the front end Electric or vacuum controlled?
Or .....
Anyone have any insight or knowlege they want to share?

PS. By the way, I haven't pulld it in the garage to look underneath and diagnose anything yet. (figures were getting a store tonight/tomorrow)
