Which should I be using around town? Half the roads are ice and some are a mix of both all winter. I'm thinking Auto but it seems like it might go into 4WD partially on the dry road. isn't that bad for the 4WD system?

Of course, I would have a different opinion so I'll sound off. If there are patches of dry pavement, then Auto mode would be better. 4HI locks the center diff and all wheels turn equally. If you turn on dry pavement, then the strain on the components is not nice. Auto keeps the center diff unlocked so wheels can turn at different rates, and power distributes as needed (not all equal as in 4HI). Now, this is assuming you have 2002 and older ( I recall 2003 it switched to using the ABS system to gain traction, not a mechanical center diff per se- could be wrong on this but concept is similar). There ain't much difference between 4HI and AWD if all the wheels are on ice anyway. My $0.02![]()
