Just get the 2wd hubs. 20 inch wheels won't make a huge difference unless you start running like a 35 or 37 on 20x14's or something like that

While some will disagree as posted, Ive had a 4wd hub come apart after removing the CV. So yes, it can come apart (and it was new).

On 2500 8 lug trucks you would probably be correct. On 6 lug trucks, no way. And i've indicated why. Of course I recommend you inspect your hub as I did to ensure it is made in such a way that it cannot come apart.

Ive had it happen on a 6 lug Tahoe. CV removed, truck rolled about 2 feet and the wheel came clean off - separated (new) bearing. Broke the caliper mounting braket and caliper.

What year model truck, and was it an OEM hub assembly?

If anyone cares, I just replaced a 2wd hub with a Timken SP500300 on my 2005 Surburban 1500. It installed beautifully, and the ABS speed sensor connector matched perfectly. Sure it has a hole for an axle I don't have, but the car is running great after thousands of miles and my wheel hasn't fallen off or something else horrible.

Reviving this thread because I just put a 4wd Timken SP500300 on my 2wd Tahoe . I'm siding with Steve on this one but I guess I'll find out if my wheel falls off.

I would have bought a 2wd hub but Amazon didn't even ask me if my Tahoe was 2wd or 4wd so I ordered the Timken it suggested and its on now! :D

Also, Kryptonite the premier hub company only sells a 4x4 hub for 2wd or 4x4 trucks.

Called Timkin 866-9TIMKEN (866-984-6536) and spoke to a man in their auto support department. I told him I was planning to run an SP500300 on a 2wd Tahoe without any sort of axle stub and nut to hold it together. He chuckled and said they get this question all the time and it is 100% safe. Since the SP500300 is a roll-formed bearing there is no need to have the stub in the splines and it will not fall apart.

as most dont have immediate access to that information still wonder why some people have done it on a hope and prayer. not all hubs are designed the same between different makes or probably even different bearing mfg. i myself have actually had a wheel come clean off before. new bearings at a shop as i didn't feel like dealing with it and some tech completely forgot the axle nut. hub seperated in 2 halves with the center cap actually staying on the rim where the axle nut would have been sitting. luckily i was going at a slow speed so nothing really happened besides i got to watch my wheel pass me.
