We have the vehicle noted above, about 12,000 miles on it. My wife called me today and said the vehicle wouldn't start, the dash is saying key not detected. I told her the battery in the key may be dead and to try me key. She said it was doing the same thing.

When i got home i replaced the battery in my key, i went out to the car, hit the unlock and lock button all worked as expected. When i pressed the button on the handle to unlock it nothing happened, i was kind of puzzled. I went a head and unlocked the door with the key. When i get in the car the Denali splash screen came up on the gage cluster screen and the radio. When that graphic went off the screen went blank.

I tried to start the car, it said no key detected, screen still blank. I was able to start the car with the key (Remote start) button. When the car started still a blank screen. I couldn't take the car out of park. I hit the ignition button to turn the car off and it wouldn't shut off. I had the turn the car off using the remote start button on the key fob.

I also tried to put the key in the cup holder, still says key not detected.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Have anyone heard of this? I guess i will be getting it towed tomorrow to the dealer.

Thanks for any input.

UPDATE:

The car is more of less a computer right? On a hope and a prayer, b/c i have no idea how i would even get it out of the garage to tow it, i said maybe it needs to reboot! I disconnected the battery for about 5 minutes. Everything functions as it should now. I am going to bring to the dealer to have them look into this however.

From afar - I’d bet you have a bad vehicle battery.

Let us know what the dealer determines. Best wishes.

Bad vehicle battery or a problem with the Serial Data Gateway module and some over the air update killing the battery.

Simple to figure out if the battery is low on charge, use a Voltmeter and check the static battery Voltage, 12.6 Volts means the battery is fully charged, but the battery could still read 12.6 Volts and be bad, but 12.2 Volt or lower means the battery charge is likely too low to start the vehicle and something likely drained the battery.

A newer battery could have a bad cell as well and be a problem. Need to make sure battery is properly tested. If the battery is low on charge, can be recharged and tested as good, might want to look into he bulletin listed above.

The engine has a strong start, i dont think it is a battery. When i say the car wont start i hit the start button and nothing happens, Once i start the car with the remote it wont shift, the gages dont work, and when i press the ignition button it doesnt turn off.

Thanks for this info, that is one of the many recalls we have had fixed.

Loke anything, do not assume the battery is good based on the way the engine starts. Get the battery tested just because.

Based on your description, you may have a bad Start/Stop push button. Maybe something is going on with the brake pressure switch? I cannot recall if you need to put your foot on the brake when the engine has been remote started to "wake" up the vehicle. By habit I always put my foot on the brake, but with the brake pressure sensor, sometimes I am light on the brake pedal the vehicle will not start with the push button and I have to push harder on the brake pedal. Might be the same with "waking" the vehicle up when remote started, I do not use the remote start often.

I still drive by 2005 Yukon Denali daily and mostly use my 2004 for longer trips so I an not fully used to how hard to press the brake pedal when starting the the engine.

How can it possibly be the vehicle battery if the engine starts just fine using the remote start feature on the fob?

And how can it be the vehicle battery if the car engine cannot be turned off from the driver seat push button?

Or maybe I'm just not understanding.

The RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) keyfob uses either 315 or 433 MHz to unlock the vehicle or remote start the engine.

The proximity key detection in the vehicle typically uses a much lower frequency so there are many things at play here. This is different than the RKE portion of the keyfob mentioned above. This is where the key is detected either just outside of the vehicle or inside the vehicle. I believe there may be a different receiver for the proximity key than the RKE receiver.

First thing for the OP to do is get the battery tested and confirmed as good. This can be done for free at most auto parts stores. The biggest mistake people make is assuming the battery is good. But just because the battery tests good does not mean there may not be a battery drain in the vehicle. In this case the OP should have a digital Voltmeter or some sort of tester to check the static Voltage of the battery.

Something like this could be a low cost option - https://www.amazon.com/Car-Battery-...13-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGY&psc=1

Often an engine can start but the cranking Voltage drops too low and causes other modules in the vehicle to go "stupid". This "stupid" mode is an invalid logic state due to capacitors not discharging enough to "reset" the module. This is why usually disconnecting the battery solves many problems, it allows the modules to go back to a "valid" logic state by discharging the capacitors in the computer modules. Same issue with your home network when it hangs due to power blips, unplug the cable modem and/or router and wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and things work as expected. This puts the devices back in a "valid" logic state due to fully discharging the onboard capacitors.

Modern vehicles have many computer modules and a stable battery and power source is critical for proper operation.

The other possibility is you are either not pushing on the brake pedal hard enough or the brake pedal pressure switch or detection circuit has a problem.

Sounds like a bad battery. I had a very similar issue when I first got my 2021 Yukon back in October 2024. It had the original battery and would start fine, but one day it was dead as a doornail.

It's free to have the battery tested at an auto parts store, or even a Batteries Plus will do it.

This was my posting on this forum trying to figure it out:

Well, whenever anything goes wrong on a modern vehicle, even a motorcycle, it's wise to check the battery first, no matter how un-related it might seem.

A few years back, the A/C stopped working on my F-150. Blew hot air only. I took in to my trusted local mechanic, having resigned myself to expect a sizeable bill for an AC repair. He called me an hour later, said truck was ready. All it needed was a battery. Something about insufficient voltage to operate the blend controller.

Go figure.

We had the same issue with our 2024 Yukon XL. Disconnected the battery terminal, then reconnected and it started fine. The dealer said it was a bad battery and there was some other module issues they fixed.
