The spare tire in our 2022 Yukon came as new with the valve stem side oriented up, which makes it impossible to check the pressure without lowering it, which is a pain. Is there any reason I can’t flip the tire upside down so the valve stem points down?

You can check it, just need one of those double ended tire gauges, like are used for trucks with tandem wheels...But, also need a double ended inflator to add air...agree, its a crappy design, but it does protect the valve stem from being ripped off by some offroading or object on the road...therby leaving you with no spare.

I always thought that an awesome thing for a dealer or service shop to do when changing your oil and rotating your tires would be to check and properly inflate the spare. They have the dang thing up in the air anyway, and check all four drivelinle tires...I often ask my service writer to have the tech do this...it has been hit or miss whether they actually have.

That said, I make a habit every fall when I set the clocks back, to lower the spare, lube the winch, and check the air in it. This started after I had a flat on my 2004 Suburban, and finally had to call OnStar to send help, and we had to cut the winch cable, because it was so rusted I coiuld not lower the tire. So now I spray it down w/ oil every fall...

I never thought about lubricating the cable - great idea. I bought a valve extension off Amazon (maybe 8") and a J-shaped fitting to allow the extension to pass through the spokes in the rim. When I checked it a couple of weeks later, the spare had leaked out all the air (Chinese junk I guess). I tightened the connections and the internal schraider valve, but still there are 2 extra connections to leak. That's why I was thinking of inverting the spare. I'm surprised you can actually remove the valve cover and check the air through the spokes - maybe you have a 10-year old daughter with skinny fingers to help out! I'll have to give it a try.
