How can I tell which set of brake pads is bad just by looking at them?

Both we're recently done, but I'm hearing a lot of squeaking and I can't tell if it's coming from the front or the rear... Last time a mechanic went down there with the flashlight and was able to tell me which ones were bad.

My back ones squeak and they have plenty of meat on them.

Is the 'squeak' like a high pitch squeal? If so, there may be high frequency vibration between the back of the brake pad and the caliper, where they touch each other. There are available metal shims or an anti-squeal compound that is placed between the back of the brake pad and the caliper that will minimize/eliminate the squeal.
