I figured I’d post it after it’s already been settled just to see if anyone has seen something like this before. I had the last owner tell me he put new ceramic pads on all 4 corners of my 07 Tahoe. I believed him because I couldn’t see under the calipers, and the truck had good brake response.
Behold when a week later I started feeling like the truck was down on power randomly. I put the rear up on jacks and spun the tires. Sure enough I could hear the brakes dragging. So I sent the truck to my mechanic and asked him if he could adjust the brakes out a bit, since I figured they were sitting too close to the rotor being new (I don’t have the tools to do brakes here and I wouldn’t do them even if I did).
About an hour later, my mechanic calls me and says he’s going to show me something, which I’m going to show you guys.
The rear pads were free floating under the caliper. Someone had welded pins to either side to make them fit the guides in the housing. Both me and my mechanic were shocked to say the least.
This might be the most ridiculous example of backyard hackmanship I’ve ever seen. Could the last guy really not find the right pads? Seems like a stupid place to cut corners.
Anyone ever seen or god forbid done something like this before?
