Basically the AC repair shop installed it years ago claiming it would help make the AC colder by not having hot water circulating through the heater coil. They cut the incoming heater hose and install it there. Turn it off or on depending on what time of year it is. Someone claimed that it wasn't a good idea with these vehicles so I'm going to keep it open for now.

Yeah, I'm old enough to remember. I saw them at Watkins Glen in the early 70's. 660,000 attendees.
Depending where you are just remove the T stat.If you are in the north where you need the engine to warm up for heat then you need one. Did you put the correct antifreeze / water mix in the new rad? Also if timing is off a bit that will cause over heating as will a transmission that is over heating.
Leave that heater hose valve open, you can't block them on an LS
The fan clutch should have resistance even when cold, if it spins freely when cold it's bad
When you top off the coolant, disconnect the steam port line at the throttle body as you fill to push all the air out, then reconnect it after you're full

I have the Autel Professional OBD2 Scanner AL319 but purchased for another vehicle, simply to verify ‘ready’ mode for emissions testing in CA. I’ve never messed with it for any other purpose. How do I get temp readings while I drive: Live Data? Would have been a great visual feature with a recent ‘overheating issue’ on my motorhome with an 8.1L Workhorse engine.

When I was a kid, I lived in Potter Valley, CA and him and his family lived in what was known as the ‘Stage Coach House’ (back when there was a horse-drawn stage line’ that came through) at the end of my dirt road. I remember that ‘truckin’ image on his International Travelall!
