Oil sensor variance?

Last 2 morning while in parent drop off I get this message...but im @ 40%. Contacted OnStar (earn that monthly $$) and they state (also sending me the report) im @ 40.3%.

Never mind that MPG :muhahaha:

Will do an "old school" manual check and might even take it in for it if it occurs 1 more time. Based on my dash sticker, I have about 1,500 more miles or 1 1/2 months before im due.

Looks like the oil LEVEL (not the LIFE) is what's triggering that message. How's the level on the dipstick?

You seem to be confusing oil life (how long before the next oil change) with oil level (the amount of oil in the engine).

If your truck is using (or leaking) oil, it doesn't matter how much longer you have until the next oil change is due if all the oil has been consumed by the engine (or leaked out).

The oil life reading (the one that says 40% in the pictures) is nothing more than a mileage counter that has a few other algorithm inputs (idle time, tow haul mode and a few other things input to it as well), to tell you when it's time to change the oil again (hence the reset button that's also visible in the pic). It has nothing to do with what the actually oil level is inside the engine.

check the dipstick, dipstick...... :buttkick:

parked on a level surface, engine off, let it sit for a minute or two for a more accurate reading.
usually the low oil indicator comes on when it is 2qt's low or more, which should not be happening on such a new rig but the dealer may shrug it off as normal but it's not.

Yeah, get that dipstick checked ASAP... message says "ADD OIL"...never mind the oil life for now...that won't matter if your oil pan pickup tube goes dry!

For my last 2 M5's, I used to keep 2 spare qt's in the boot just incase as M5's are know to burn more oil and also due to "spirited driving" i'd assume. Spoke with the dealership and they said on the next oil change they will need to run an oil usage/consumption test.

So the "oil life" really doesnt mean shit as what I gather now it is based on x and y factors and not actually reading any oil level sensors.

Oil life is how much more you have until changing the oil. It's based on some algorithm that takes into account driving style (idling, city or highway driving), engine load, temperature and who knows what else?

The low oil is simply a switch that the oil level in the sump is low. It's like a float switch.

The two things are not really related. I mean, unless your "change oil" message comes on AND your oil pan is also low, then you'll get that message you showed that says "add oil."
