Hi Everyone,

I have a 2021 GMC Yukon Denali 6.2 with only 628 miles on it. There is a subtle whining noise both at idle and in gear when driving. Wondering if others have experienced this? No check engine lights or drivability issues. It is more of an annoyance than anything.

I have an annoying whine or squeel in ours.

Been there from the first week - didn't notice at the pick up - but probably was there. I notice it when starting up cold and then anytime decelerating into 4 cylinder mode. I left GM a detailed review and then will also be getting it checked out when we do the first service. Have roughly 5k Miles now, looks like first service is scheduled to notify me at 7500 miles.

Research I've done says it's likely something to do with the exhaust dampers when going from 8 cylinder to 4. Drives me crazy and seems I can make it go away by mashing the gas and forcing full engine output.

No lights or no operational problems. Just a pain to my ears.

How can you tell it is in 4 cylinder mode? From my understanding they can go down to 1 cylinder now too.

By chance is your wife or children with you or do you hear this while driving alone?

I officially don't know it's 4 vs 1 just going off some of the stuff internet wisdom I observed when clicking around on the subject. Very well could be lower than 4 cylinders in use.

But the whine is annoying.

I have the same problem in my 2021 SLT. I’ve had it for a year and have 22K miles on it. It’s at the shop right now and apparently is a common problem. The service dude says the last one he has it was a pulley and a tensioner, which makes sense to me. I expect it to be covered by warranty. We’ll see later today.

That’s what it was. They had to replace a pulley and tensioner. I expect to have the same problem again at 40K miles, but they fixed it for free. It’s common. I heard it on Tahoes too.

my 18 is a slightly different engine but the noise I was hearing was the water pump, I thought it was the vacuum pump because those are known to make noise before going bad, but nope water pump at 36k it was whining and ended up having a floppy pulley in the end you could wiggle it by hand like it was going to just fall off. just something to check maybe.

Does anyone know if the tension/ pulley issue is covered under warranty ?
Yes, it would be if you were still in the warranty period (for sure in the 3/36, maybe in the 5/60 powertrain, would have to read the fine print on that one).

You reference "the tension/pulley issue." That I know of, this is not a high instance, TSB type issue; so diagnosing this yourself based on a few forum posts where someone else mentions having this issues is probably not the thing to do.
