Seriously....My father-in-law is to the other extreme. Once one of his cars uses a 1/4 he goes and tops it back off to full again. In his head this is "cheaper" because he only pays $30 to fill it up. He doesn't care about the fact of going to the gas station every other day

:yuno: WHY WOULD ONE DO THAT?!

Well, it won't do any harm. Just kind of sounds dumb to me...

That's how my grandad is. But he has a 2004 Buick with 8,000 miles on it. 1/4 tanks will last him month or so. Grocery store is 1/2 mile church is 2 miles. He fills at 1/4 never know when there will be a shortage he said.

That's hilarious.

That's hilarious.

There are many things he does that make no logical sense to anyone but him but somehow he convinces himself that it's a completely sane and logical thing to do. He's also hoarder and rarely throws anything away.

I did some research on this topic and came up with some interesting results...

1. Fill up at night or early morning when the temp is cool. Heat make the gas "gassier" so when u fill up with hot gas, youʻre getting more vapor and thusly wasting $$$$.
2. Never fill up after the the big tanker fills up the underground tanks. When they fill up the underground tanks, the gas on the bottom is residue like and it gets kicked up into the gas that was just poured in and ultimately will go into your engine!!!
3. When filling up, squeeze the handle as little as possible. The faster the gas gets pumped, the more air that gets into your tank and thusly again wasting $$$$.

These are the major points that resulted from my research... I tried to find as many sources as possible and many differentiated sources as possible. If you all have any other ideas or suggestions please share!!!

 He's just an aging Engineer. The good thing is he can just about fix anything without ever leaving the house because he's usually got whatever needs on hand from the stuff he's never tossed out  It may take him a while to find what he needs, though. haha

Gauge gets to 1/4 or less, I fill up. My time is more important to me than having to stop for gas every other day.

If at the station it gets a full tank. A partial just means ill be back sooner. I know ill burn it so may as well fill all way up. I don't even look at the cost anymore swipe the BP card accept my discount and fill her up. Move on with my life.

AIN'T NO BODY GOTS TIME FOR THAT HALF TANKS CRAP

^This right here. Could not agree more.

Fill er up unless the pump is going REALLY slow.

I hate pumps that do that. Worst is when they go real slow because that means they're probably low on gas. Soon as I see it doing that I hang the pump up and go somewhere else...not much into bottom feeding out of anything.

What is the point of not getting a full tank?

Waiting until pay-day is about the only reason I see. I just can't stand having much less than a half a tank. Never know when I'm going to have to burn off...never had a fuel system problem in my life.

This + safeway rewards points are a one time thing. You get $1 off a gallon whether you put in 10 gallons or 20 but then the points are gone until you buy more groceries. :mf_pcwhack:

I am lucky that driving to work I use 1 gallon a day, plus few on a normal weekend. I always fill up once a week, the idea of having empty space in my tank does not sit well for some reason.

Not sure about todays gas tanks but back in the day they always said not to run low all the time as this would create water condensation in the tank. I usually run down near a quarter of a tank then fill completely up. One thing I have not seen mentioned is the extra gas and time wasted going to get gas if you fill up with more than half a tank not to mention carrying the extra weight of the gas around all the time.

Half tank ... mainly because the pump trigger lock pops every 30 seconds or so. I get tired of adjusting the handle and starting over.
