Hey guys, its been a few months since my last post but Im back in town now and the hoe has a few more issues that I could really use input on. Haha. There are two big problems. First, my tranny has started slipping and is on its way out but definitely still has some life left before totally fried. Second, my AC evaporator is has gone back and leaks now. Ill just go ahead and say that I do want to take on both of these projects on my own. I have lots of time and space to work on it and my dad has no problem buying tools and parts as long as I do the work myself.

1. How hard is it to change the evaporator from someone who's done it? I plan on ripping the whole dash out and everything, are there any other parts that should be replaced while im at it??

2. For the tranny, I plan on starting it after the AC evap but I want to start researching and questioning now. Lol. I have been looking into the Monster tranny kit and was wondering what people have thought about them so far? They seemed to be pretty popular on here. I know that rebuilding a tranny is definitely not easy but Im willing to start it myself and I know where to get help if I get stuck or have questions. At this point though Im just starting to look into it and Im not even %100 sure of which tranny I have in the hoe anyways. All help is appreciated, I figure we can start with this and go from there. Haha. Thanks!

unknown at this time.
1. once you remove the hvac box and ope it at the evap is straight forward. clean and inspect all other components for damage or wear. replace all the gaskets and seal. they are still available.and cap the the freon lines on the rest of truck while working on it. replace the accumulator drier as well.

2. you have an 4l60e tranny. I have technical pdf son the tranny if you need that has rebuild and technical operation. but for about$2200 you can get a very stout rebuild from a few places. or a gm unit for a little less which still has improvements added on.

I see more satisfaction in building/rebuilding something yourself then paying for someone to do it for you. At the very least, pull the transmission out yourself.

If you decide to build one, just take your time and get everything you will need before you start. Lot's of information on rebuilding a 60E out there.

Ok so it's been a long while again. Been crazy busy with motocross and school and working on our other 5 cars. Haha. So Im definitely rebuilding my own tranny. I dropped it out this past weekend and got it sitting on the saw horses. I have been looking a lot at the SS Monster in a box kit for my Hoe from Monster Transmissions and was wondering what you guys think. There seem to be a bunch of reviews out there of where Monster was real dick about the warranty policy and shit and the kits werent always reliable but I trust you guys a lot more than random reviews. Who makes the best rebuild kit for these trannies? Im ready to start rebuilding this *****. Haha.

I rebuilt my own buying parts, the monster kit isn't too bad but there are some things in there that have been updated since they put that together some years ago.

When I get home tonight ill send you to a place that is 100% better than monster. You can ask questions and tell them what you want your trany to do and they will give you advice on what is good and what is crap. When i did mine I called them up and told them what I ws wanting todo and I had a good idea of the parts I wanted and when I was ordering from them the stoped me and told me a few very expencive parts I ws ordering from them I didnt need it. I did rebuilt my trany over 2 years ago and still runing strong and that is with me rock crawling. I called monster first and all they wanted to do is sell me a built one and did even want to answer some question i had. maybe it wsa the guy i was talking to but illl never spend my money with them. the money I saved by doing it my self i put into better and stonger parts.

those kits get expenisve ...

I did mine and I never rebuilt one ether. There is a DVD that will walk you throe it and a ton of on line place with walk throe. There is one special tool you will need to get and a trany jack wouldn't hurt ether. Hell now I rebuild them on the side for a few shops local. I can rebuild 2 a day.

This would be awesome man. Id much rather go through a company that is helpful and there to answer questions with good customer support and I like that they can set up a custom kit for specific wants and needs. That would be very helpful, thank you! How long did it take you to rebuild the internals once you got everything? I would like to call the company and talk with them about my options as soon as I can to get my hoe back on the road

If you've never done one before it's going to take a few days atleast. My last rebuild I was waiting on parts ... :driver:

Ok got all the tranny parts ordered and on their way. In the meantime Im taking out the dash to fix the AC evaporator and Ive run into a little problem. I was following another thread on the dash removal and I've got it basically all the way apart, all trim and dash pieces and panels have been taken off and the big piece under the steering wheel is off and the two bolts next to the kick panels and all the vents and gauges. It's loose and ready to come out and from what I've read it rotates forward into the driver seat and but I don't see how that would be possible with the steering wheel and column still there? Do you have to remove those to get the dash out? It feels like the dash is still getting hung up on something but I can't find it. Going to work on it tomorrow so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Thats what I thought when I was looking at it but no one else mentioned touching the steering column so I thought I'd ask first. Thanks though, let you know if I get it tomorrow or not

I was able to get the dash removed, definitely had to remove the steering column. I dont see any way around not removing it. I also removed my driver seat for ease of access but not sure thats necessary. It was bigger job than I expected but over all it wasnt too bad for the first removal. Now that Ive got the whole dash, steering column, and all the A/C vents and tubes removed how do I get to the evaporator and go about replacing it? Also, is there anything else that I should replace or check while I have everything apart?

raptor... why not get a low mileage 4L80E? it bolts up, and i believe the computer can be tuned to run it, may have to have a different section of harness, as i'm not sure if the plugs are the same. i'm sure you could find one in a junkyard for probably $500-$700, and they're fairly bulletproof as far as what your motor can throw at it.

I wouldnt be opposed to it but I hate the idea of putting a used tranny in my truck especially if I couldnt tell how many miles were on it. All the parts I got for my 4l60 are beefed up and upgraded so Im anxious to see how it'll feel and pull now. The new tranny will be a huge improvement over stock. Ill upgrade the whole thing to a really beefed up 4l80 in a few years once I blow the engine and drop in a monster :D
