Trouble filling up the gas tank

I am wondering if this is a unique problem to my Yukon XL or if it is wide spread one. When I filling up the tank, the handle clicks off (like it is full) at least five times during a fill up. I know it isn't full because I have only put in about 5 gallons when it happens the first time. I have tried pulling the nozzle out a little, pushing it to the side, pushing it further in, etc. It seems it is worse at gas stations that have a fast flow.

Anyone else have this problem?

got this from another post on the forum. has the part number and it is pretty easy to replace. i did this on a buddies truck and it took less than an hour.



Here is what is it called and how to fix it:
AC DELCO 214-2149 [CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID VALVE]
Features:
Brand new AC DELCO component with correct connector
Replaces dealer part numbers: 25932571, 214-2149

-It started off as 'Tighten Gas Cap" on the DIC, As the solenoid valve was stuck open and would vent the tank so the computer thought the gas cap was loose. I got the solenoid unstuck but later it failed in the close position and would not vent when filling the tank. I too tried everything including turning the nozzle completely upside down but the nozzle would just click off. The day after I replaced it I was able to fill the tank as fast as the pump would go and the engine light went out a day or so later, Have not had the problem ever since.
****UPDATE****

-Problem seems to be solved, I replaced the evap solenoid the day before yesterday and now I can fill the tank as fast as the pump will go. It only cost me $28, The engine light has not shut off yet but that should resolve itself in a few days after I drive it around a bit.

-It connects to the charcoal canister under the rear by the gas tank, A lot of people refer to it as the evap valve or solenoid.
-You have to crawl under but its just above and infront of the rear axel.
-A screw driver to pry up on the tab in the middle of the bracket and the same with tabs on the hose to release it. Then slide the new part back in the bracket and bend the tab back to hold it and make the connections.
-About 15 minutes of your time and no gas leaking, Also easier to get to if you drop the spare tire.

Will this also fix the fact that I know I have 3/4 tank of gas left, but my gas guage will go from empty (with the light on) back up to 3/4 full from start up to about a minute into a drive?

great info, I have the same problem, although it seems that some pumps I can get it full without shutting off if I fill it slow. But that take a while when you have pump 25+ gals in.

25+ gallons?! because you have an xl? I wish my 06 denali had a bigger tank then 22 gallons. The 6.0 guzzles and a little bigger of a tank would be very nice on road trips and what not.

Ive had the issue maybe 2x in the last 2 years. My boss just had it replaced in his 03 2500 with a 6.0. Its a known problem but once it happens more freqently ill replace the soleniod.

Only 22 gallons? I thought the Denali had a 26 gallon tank like the Escalade does. And then the ESV is even larger, 31 gallons.

OP, thanks for the tip, I'm going to do a little looking into my friend's 06 Denali, she has issues with the SES light and tighten gas cap messages.

Im having an issue im hoping someone can help.I have a 01 hoe and if I fill it up and dont manually stop it,then when its full enough to click off the pump,as soon as it clicks off gas spews out and all down the side of my truck,maybe half a liter.

Going to bump this back up. I have replaced the evap vent valve and this still happens at some stations. I think it is related to how fast the gas pumps. Any other ideas on how to fix this?

okay the cannister purge solenoid is on top of the intake manifold what your talking about is the vent valve solenoid wich is roughly above the rear diff
the vent solenoid to the rear of the vehicle charcoal canisters in the middle by the fuel tank and purge solenoid is on top the engine i know this because i just replaced my entire evap system

also the drive cycle for the pcm to test the the evap system takes along time

also if it is the evap system you should be getting a p0440 or p0446 code there is actually several codes but the evap codes start with p04xx

Think your right, I just changed the vent valve solenoid and had the same results. Same station and even used the same pump, it still shuts off. I'll have to try another station and see what happens.

Replaced my valve and BAM, works perfectly now. CEL even went off.

Have a 2004 Tahoe, a while back the tank would not fill, I replaced the vent solenoid and all was well, then noticed the smell of gas and found that the lines from the tank/pump were rotted out. I had a local garage replace the pump assembly and no more smell. Since that time the gas pump will shut off no matter how fast or slow you are filling at 3/4 of a tank (right on the nose)
Last night I put in 16 gallons and then had to nurse in another 6 or so. The garage I go to are good people and friends, they smoked the system and said the evap solenoid was sticking so they replaced it.. no change, next they took the tank back out looking for pinches lines/hoses and saw nothing wrong.

Anyone have any other ideas?? The mechanics are scratching their heads on this one..

Not trying to steal the thread but every time I fill up my 04 escalade I'm lucky to get 20 gal. I have had it as low as a 20 mile range. My gas gauge is broken right now so I can only go off the range displayed under the speedo. Is the extra 5-6 gallons just a built in "reserve" or something

Sounds like either the charcoal canister is full of fuel/mud or you have and EVAP line to the canister that is collapsed or also restricted in some way. Tell them to check that first.

I had a guy with a 2500 have the same issue. Saw mud all over the underside of the truck and bed areas. Pulled off the canister and it weighed 3-4 times what a normal one weighs. Blew it out with an air nozzle hooked up to shop air and suddenly the shop was in the middle of an Arabian sandstorm. LOL

mine had same problem when i got it replaced the vent solenoid and it helped alot but didn't solve the problem i found if i hold up on the filler it does not shut off but arm gets tired after 20 + gallons

That also defeats the whole purpose of the EVAP system.

I replaced the evap in 2007 yukon cause the check engine light was on agter replacing the light is now off but now cant pump gas hardly
