on my 01 tahoe with 127k.....

sometimes I'll be driving and the low coolant light comes on....temp never creeps above 1 notch below half (normal) and the coolant level "appears" fine...but what is fine for these trucks?

at cold or when the engine is off, coolant overflow is half filled. once truck is running and/or warmed up the level drops down in half. once turned off or cold, back up to half level.

no coolant leaks visible. system was pressure tested. no puddles on ground.

any ideas? bad sensor?

Sounds like what I was experiencing right before my water pump crapped out! Make sure to top off the coolant resevoir to where it needs to be and see how long it takes for it to come back down to set off the sensor!

but when the truck is off, it stays at half...if i fill it (which I have) it becomes overfilled.

It only drops down once running. can't fill while running because its pressurized?

There are marks on the resevoir, where is the level sitting at in the morning when it's been sitting overnight? If it's showing that you need to add coolant, then be sure to do it then!! And be sure that's what it's actually reading by opening up the cap at that time (since it's cold) to confirm the level since these tanks get dirty inside and sometimes have a fake level line due to residue (mines bad like that).
If the level is fine at that time, then I'd say the tank sensor is haywire or just bad, otherwise if you level is indeed low, the the sensor is working and it might be a start of another problem!

ok ok....let me clarify:

the coolant level in the overflow is at half when the truck is completely cold (overnight)

once warmed up, the level drops in half (to 1/4)....once the truck goes cold again its back up to full half way

(checked for dirty-tank is pretty clean)

Like he said, there are marks on the tank. Does it "look" half full, or is it half full compared to the marks?

The coolant level fluctuating is completely normal. The system only builds up pressure when the truck is running, and only then is coolant circulating through all of the passages in the block, the radiator, trans cooler ect. This causes the level in the reservoir to change because all of that coolant is actually circulating through the motor doing it's job. The reservoir is just that - a reservoir.

If the level is low, fill it according to the marks on the tank. If the level is ok, leave it alone.

the tank itself when cold is half filled (or up to the fill mark)

Well, if its cold and at the fill mark, fill it up to the full mark and see how long it takes to drop back down to the fill mark!! More than likely you are losing coolant somewhere if you are topping it off and it keeps dropping!

Also, if you park in a garage at night, take some clean cardboard and place it on the ground under the rig overnight and see if you see any spots the next morning, or after driving somewhere!

That's odd, on our 02 yuk, if the level is at the "full cold" mark, which is at the seam about half way on the reservoir, then once its warmed up the level is higher by about 3/4 inch. Only when the engine is revved to about 2000-2500 rpm do I see the level drop, but then comes back up at idle. None of my heater controls are on though...do you have any of the temp settings raised, like for the back seats? I always thought the coolant level in the resevoir rises as the engine is warmed up. The only time I experienced the coolant level dropping (aside from the water pump going) after warmup was after I changed out radiator hoses and the system wasn't completely "burped".

It's supposed to get higher when it's running at normal temperature.

Since its not really just an overflow like the OBS trucks had its actually referred to as an expansion tank.

it's possible I am losing you guys due to translation. ( I am very used to *** cars, this american stuff is new to me-but parts are cheaper lol)

I will take pix of the expansion/overflow tank at cold and warm to show u the differences...hopefully that paints a better picture...I don't want to throw money at this for nothing

I think I get what you're saying: your coolant level actually DROPS after the engine is warmed up. This is opposite to what I have, however, yes, a picture is worth a thousand or so words.
Only time I've seen that happen is 1) bad water pump, 2) right after opening up system to change hoses, and system not properly "burped", or whatever the true car term for that is.

left for work this AM in pouring rain..wasn't about to take pix then...came home for lunch went over to truck in driveway..popped hood...coolant expansion tank was only half full....haven't driven it since last night

guess I am looking at a water pump..which isn't expensive..just a PITA to do (it appears) :(

First off, before you go changing out the pump, crawl under the truck with a good flashlight and look at the water pump from underneath and see if the weep hole at the base of the shaft is wet. Also check the hose connections to the pump and make sure they are dry or not!!

Second, if you haven't driven it at all since you topped it off, then you have a leak somewhere else (unless the pump is indeed visually leaking). Check all hoses and connections, also check the expansion tank well for a crack or a leaky hose connection!!

Check it all out real good before deciding to do the water pump, and as for the water pump change out, it's all pretty easy to do!! Only thing tough is taking the rad fan off of the waterpump if it's a clutch one, those can be tricky!! If and when you get to that point, I can point you in the right direction for the tricks to take that off without getting pissed like I did when I changed mine out!! lol

Check all that stuff out and keep us in the loop!

:( something is getting lost here (beyond my coolant)

I topped it off after it sat all night (now it is at the full mark). I haven't driven it since last night, I only topped it off on lunch TODAY! before I filled it, it was a little low

there are NO puddles of orange coolant under my truck at all.

Sounds like you might be burning it.
Check your engine oil for coolant. You could have a cracked head, or bad intake or head gasket.

Getting pressure tested again today....when I came home from work it was lower than lunch and it just sat all day. So gotta be a leak somewhere

Stay tuned....

Ahhh, light at the end of the tunnel. If you're doing it yourself, might I recommend Gates brand hoses or OEM. I tried Dayco from autozone and the top hose collapsed on me under the vacuum after cooling down...just not sturdy enuf. Went to OReilly's and got the Gates hose and it is notably stiffer, and only 4 dollars more ($20 vs $24). OEM from dealer like $90. I didn't check online as I needed mine changed ASAP. Good luck.
