I have a 99 Suburban 4x4 w/3.42 rear end. Its making a droning sound, and starting to leak fluid. What is a reasonable price to get it rebuilt? Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.:emotions122:

If you are just doing a stock rebuild the parts will be a few hundred by themselves. I installed my own gears and everything worked great so I have no idea what typical labor is ...

unknown at this time.
factory specified time is 3.8 hours so you can judge that against labor rates in your area. Reccomend you go to a specialized shop for it if possible. If you don't have one already then I would reccomend a locker of some sort. Others hear can chime in on which is best. If you a typical complete overhual parts kit will cost about $250. Seals, bearing etc. But no ring and pinion if yours are worn too. If so maybe another $200 maybe. Overall you should be under $800 for an overhaul.

True Trac, and might as well add new gears, about $200...and install, most I've seen is about $250-$300

Search Rons, best 'package' provider I've seen, and prices.

I would drop a used axle in there instead of rebuilding the 10 bolt. It would be a lot cheaper and if you are semi mechanical, you could probably do it yourself in your driveway. You can pick up a used 10 bolt of craigslist or the junk yard for a couple hundred bucks. Or you could put in a 14 bolt semi float axle under it. It's a lot more beefy than the 10 bolt and will hold up to more abuse. They are scarce but can be found.

Either way, it's your choice. I just wouldn't invest a grand or whatever in a rebuilt 10 bolt as I don't have a lot of faith in them. However, if you spend the coin to get it rebuilt, it would probably come with a warranty which is a plus if you go that route.

You would go and get a junkyard axle with unknown miles and no warranty and just put it in your truck and go without rebuilding or atleast assessing the current condition of it?? It could be just as bad or worse then what he has in there now.

10 bolts can be build up fairly strong, if he put the money he was going to drop on a junkyard piece into his rear end he would be halfway to a rebuild ...

I think alot of you guys are misunderstanding the point of junkyard parts.

the only problem i have had with my 10 bolt is 4 wheel parts not installing gears and a locker the right way. hell i drove it for a year with stock gears and the G80 in it after the lift. did a few things with it that would have snapped it in pieces if it really was as bad as people "claim" it to be.

if you don't beat the shit out of your truck you really don't NEED a 14 bolt. is it a good upgrade YES.

on the junk yard parts. yes i would go to a junkyard, pull a rear, pull the cover/inspect it, and throw it under my truck if i needed to.

Obviously I would at the very least pop the cover off and take a look at the internals to make sure they were in half way decent condition and look at how many miles are on it. But with as many miles as mine has on it I can't justify spending a grand on a rebuild. And besides, a lot of junk yards offer a warranty, even if it is only 30 days. But again, this is ME and what I would do. If you want to rebuild your rear end, then more power to you.

I can't lie, mine was rebuilt (going on the fourth time since 4WP can't get it right to save there asses). If I would have known about the 14Bolt before hand i would have waited. Too late! sunk new gears, an $800 locker and installation on the 10 bolt....

Huh? I knew the G80 was bad because everyone here says so, but I thought the 10 bolt itself was ok. The 14Bolt would be better, but it's rare around here. I was planning on replacing my G80 with that Trutrac BowtieFreak likes but in my existing rear which is 10bolt.

If I was in a pinch or my existing diff blew suddenly, I'd probably pickup a junkyard rear just to keep my truck as my DD while I a) rebuilt my old one, or b) upgraded to something better. Point is, I'd use the unknown JY only as long as it took to have it replaced with a known good rear end.

few posts back i argued it is not a bad rear end for someone who isn't going to beat on it or use it truely offroad. once i get the truck "done" i want to be able to take it out and beat on it once in awhile, if i would have known about the 14 bolt being such an easy swap i wouldn't have dropped all the money on the 10 bolt.

not saying its bad, just would have personally wanted to go with the stronger one out of the gate instead of wasting a grand on it.
