Most 4-speed trucks set up for max towing come with 3.73s. If yours was a lighter duty optioned model, it would have 3.42s and or 3.23s depending on the engine. A 4.10 upgrade is quite common.

Below are three examples of the gear multiplication and RPMs at speed for a given gear with new stock sized tires:

See the torque multiplication with each gear change for each gear in the transmission? How many rpms do you want to be turning on the highway?

This comment is directed to everyone:

When talking gear swaps, it's important to establish what kind of transmission we're dealing with. A 4.10 gear set is not necessarily the best thing for a 3-speed or 10-speed transmission for example. Lower numeric ratios would deliver better overall performance. Another way to look at it is that 4.10s behind a 4-speed don't come close to equaling the performance of 3.42s behind a 6-speed.

Very useful. Thanks, SD.

4.30 gears!
You're doing that on purpose, right? :)

Now I've gotta look into another possible option. And, to be honest, I don't do much highway at all these days so I could logically make a case for 4.10/4.30.

There's a possibility I could be towing on highways more in future though, but .... what if I'm not?

Thanks for that.

I am gotta get a quote and make a appointment for a alignment
Hey you didn't regear when you got your TrueTrac, did you? If so, gimme the price of the parts and labor when you get your invoice. Just for a reference. I know everybody charges differently.

no but i believe it required (or I requested) a new pinion set regardless, I purchased a new yoke separate from the dealer
mine is 3.42 already. the one I need to change now is in the Silverado, finding a gu6 front diff should be no problem, the issue it is has the 9.5" rear end, not even sure if they make a truetrac in the 9.5. in any case need to pay down some debt first before I open that can of worms. could not find a 3.42 silverado when I was shopping for it with the options I wanted anyway. one Sierra denali showed up on a lot with everything I wanted, called the dealer late in the day and they didn't even have it priced yet, called the next morning and they said they sent it to auction

I daily drive an 06 Suburban LQ4/4L80e/4.10. We also own a 2020 Express 3500 passenger van with the L96/6L90/3.42. My wife drives the van daily to pick/drop off the kids at school. I think both vehicles are close in curb weight

I sometimes get to drive the van and I actually prefer the 4L80/4.10 combination.

The van will tend to downshift too often when I try to accelerate. The cruising speed is too low, like 1600 RPM. Once it's in the 2200-2400 RPM, then it comes alive.

The suburban cruises at higher RPM of course (2400 RPM), but it does so where the engine
is in the higher power band. That one will just go when I push the accelerator. Very rare to downshift.

Well, you could change it to something else or put a taller tire on to tame the rpms to your liking.

Yeah I'm at the limit for tire height without trimming wheel wells and/or a lift. Not enough need for a lift really. For now the gears are the only real interest.

Yeah I can vouch for those issues with the 3.42. Look forward to the better cruising speed and performance of the better gears. (3.73/4.10)

Hey are any of you guys fans of any good podcasts that discuss these matters? I'd like to find a good source of info on these things discussed in a podcast/Youtube format that I could just listen to and soak-in.

Interesting. My mind is struggling to understand the logic and dynamics of what he actually did, but I think it would only be right if we all had just enough land to be able to tinker like that all we wanted.

That'd be fun to be able to solve your own problems like that on your own land. So few today can even find enough room at their home to do basic maintenance on their vehicles. I loved working on my truck in the garage in recent years past and now Public Storage moved into our area and bought up all the storage companies and started sky-rocketing everyone's rents 3x/year.

Had to first consolidate two units into one and then ultimately move everything home. It's other fam members' belongings, I don't believe in storage units, but now my garage is filled and a guest room, etc. Wish I had more space. We all could use more.
I immediately think of this -> https://www.motortrend.com/features/chevy-quagmire-4x4-four-wheeler-inbox/

Yes, that looks about right.

The Sequoia story in that article hits close to home. I've off-roaded for so many years in 2wd in my 07 Tahoe, and in a Z71 years prior I always went off-road in 2wd - rarely needing 4wd. (I like to 'get' places and explore more than seek out mud or rocks).

Little did I know back then that the Z71 had a G80 all along, but that's just more reason to install a TrueTrac in my Tahoe today.

I thought you were running stock sized tires? What are you running?
Kinda splitting hairs, I know, but technically I believe the stock for that vehicle is 265/70/17 (31.6"), but it did come from the factory as an option with 275/55/20's (31.9"). I'm running some of those in an all terrain that has enough meat on it that it's fairly close to rubbing. I believe 33" just barely clears, if not rubs just a little.

I had it leveled by some stiff front struts in the past, but when I replaced them for better quality, it returned it to factory height (lower) in the front. So it's got its factory rake again now and probably slightly less clearance in the front wheel wells than it had previously.

that's what i like to do just go out and explore, hopefully without breaking down in the middle of nowhere. I can self recover in most instances but completely breaking down is the sketchy part. We were out Christmas tree hunting here, someone in a 4runner had just mobbed thru and didn't come back so I figured it was either passable or I would find them stuck ahead of me lol
