I have slacked on pics of my new headlights, but for good reason. As I was returning home from PA back to CO, I noticed my oil pressure kept creeping lower and lower. After I got off of the highway, the oil pressure at idle dropped to under 20 psi. I got home, and after I unpacked and parked, I got 'low oil pressure stop engine' warning. I figured it was just a faulty sensor again, so I replaced it. The oil pressure stayed at 0! So I pulled the oil filter, and it was full with no metal. I put a new filter on, but did not put any oil in the new filter so verify no oil pressure. The new filter stayed bone dry after I started the engine, so I've verified there is no oil pressure. I'm assuming I have a bad oil pump, but this engine was built about 3 years ago. The oil pump was new but a factory unit. I can't think of anything that would cause this except the oil pump.

dumb question...but you did make sure there is oil in it ?
if the oil pump was broken it would probably be making noise, cause they are metal gears. pickup tube blocked or fell out of pump maybe?
What did the dipstick say?

Cracked or possibly broken o ring on the pick up? Anything is possible. Had the same exact issue with my van. Oil pressure would go to 0, but never heard any knocking or tapping. It had an aftermarket Melling HV oil pump in it. I also thought it was the op sensor, so I changed it twice with oem. Stayed at 0. I never figured it out, but I drove it like that for a year or 2 with no bad results.

That was the first thing I checked, and the oil level is almost at the full mark. There are no odd noises coming from the engine, that's why at first I thought it was just another faulty oil pressure sensor like the last time this happened. Even with the new oil filter on and no oil pumped into it, there isn't any bad clanking noises.

It is a c*nt hair off the full mark, not low enough to add any. After I took the oil filter and put the new one on empty, it should have dropped the oil level on the dipstick, but there was no change when I started it up.

I'm gonna pull the timing cover and oil pump this weekend. I guess I'll also pull the oil pan to see the pickup screen too. I spent about $10K on this engine, so I better go over everything.

I got the front of the engine pulled apart, but not the oil pan yet. I can't remove the oil pump yet because of the pick up tube bolt, but I wanted to make sure I'm having pump issues so I pulled the pump cover. With my pick, I felt the relief valve open and there are scoring marks on the gear and the cover.
When I pulled the cover, the gear seemed stuck to it and I had to knock it free.

I think I got a bad oil pump. When I was building this engine, I ordered things from rockauto, but at the time I didn't pay attention to their 'gold' line and thought I bought genuine GM parts. I'm thinking I bought an inferior pump.

Curious now. I stated I also had a similar issue with my 4.8 Express van. I had a Melling HV pump installed. So you think it mightve not been pumping oil to the top end? Or at all(yours)? Strange there wasn't any knocking coming from it......Still going to pull your oil pan?

Yeah, I'm going to pull the pan for sure. I'm almost certain it's the oil pump, because the last test I did was put a new empty oil filter on and started the engine. The new oil filter didn't get a drop of oil in it, and that's why I believe the pump is at fault. The pan will be pulled off this week, but I'm not as young as I used to be, so it takes me longer. This just gives me a reason to drive the G8 more

Well dang….. just getting caught up…. Hopefully the oil issue is just the pump!! She looks good though with the headlights…. I like em!

I put the new pump on, and got everything cleaned up to put this all back together this week. I've been sifting through the oil, and so far I've only come across 2 small pieces of metal, but it looks like it came from the oil pump. Here's some random pics

So, in your opinion the oil pump was the cause of the issue? If so, that's probably what caused the same issue in my Express van. Still strange there was no tapping.

Yeah, the oil pump was the cause. Since I've replaced the oil pump, my cold idle pressure has been around 60 psi, and 30 psi hot idle.
