pulleys squeak ?

starting to get squeaking sounds from the engine ... the tension is weak I can push on the belt and move it by hand not much effort required (only operating the water pump FYI.. )

does this mean it needs to be replaced?

i'm assuming this is the original belt from 2008 115k miles as well.


no misfires or other weird noises besides the typical one for a AFM engine,
Engine runs STRONG and mpg is still great
. mpg is 25.5-26 in v8 mode..

For what the cost of a new belt is, I’d replace it. Is there a tensioner in that belt path as well? Might check and consider replacing that as well.

I had a broken pulley, it rattled a little bit while running and when you restarted it on a hot day it squealed for a moment when starting. Ordered an ACDelco kit with belt, pulleys and tensioner and haven't had any problems since then. The kit was cheaper than buying the pieces separately.

Since yours is a Hybrid it's likely that the belt drive is different, but given the age I'd replace the belt, idler(s) and tensioner.

I'd even buy a H2Opump in advance, besides replacing every belt & pulley & tensioner with over 100,000 miles on it.

I know this is after the fact, but I've had good luck repacking those bearings with grease. I had noisey pulleys on the tensioner and idler. After looking at how cheap the advance auto ones were, and in a time crunch, I just popped the dust seal out with a pick, washed it in brake clean and blew it out. Then worked new grease in and popped the cover back on. I did this on my 2008 about 20k miles ago and it's still purring along.

If the spring is bad in the tensioner, that's a different story.

it has the same as the 6.0L everything is just idlers besides the water pump

Make yourself a redneck megaphone out of a long screwdriver and a plastic jug cut off. Remove the cap and slide it over the screwdriver and go around placing the screwdriver tip on suspect part and take a listen.

I've never done it myself but Eric at SMA showed how effective it is, and potential costs nothing. I'll see if I can find the YT video.

It’s worth replacing all belts and tensioners and pulleys at the same time.

If you leave an old belt on there it could break and take the rest of your belts off with it.

i'll take the belt off over the week end and see if it still makes the noise other wise the junk yard it is...

i was reading other threads and it could be a AFM system failure... if it's the pully i'll fix it i'm not going to bother with the AFM repair, as it also needs a hybrid battery Cost more then it's worth at that point

pull the belt off, start it and see if it's gone.

Yep it's the Tension pulley wobbling just pulled the car apart to check it..
