I would have to say a good 1,000 miles or so cause that is my daily. But with all the closures here in El Paso not much driving has occurred since then. We did go up to Ruidoso NM. that same day I installed the can for the weekend.

I'm scared to see how little yours has compared to mine.

IDK, when I checked the dipstick it was wet. The stick doesn't even sit low to the bottom of the can so I'm a little curious myself.

I have come to realize the dipstick is completely usless. Since the oil often stays on the steel mesh and the stick is through the mesh when you pull it out it gets covered in oil. I suppose it would work well if there was no mesh but then you likely wouldn't catch much oil.

Let me ask you this, did you add mesh to bottom of the lid or just in the cup. A friend of mine added it to the bottom of the lid not in the cup.

Uhh I just left the provided mesh in the cup. I might add some finer steel wool on top of it, but first I'm adding an inline clear fuel filter to the outline. That way I can see how much oil is getting by and go from there. I am happy to note it appears to be oil and only oil, no fuel or even water from what I can tell.

By adding that filter, wouldn't you have to change it every so often cause it'll clog up.

Gonna tackle the water pump tomorrow. Thinking about draining the block at the same time.

What can I expect difficulty-wise in getting them out? And Haynes says there are 2 while some DIYers claim 4. The engine has 330K with unknown service history. Will I find a lot of sediment?

Should I bother, or not?

Thanks.

Depends on if you have rust or not I suppose. There’s 4 bolts. When I did mine at 150k it was super easy, no sediment just Dexcool. At 330k who knows.

By "getting them out" do you mean the block drain plugs?

Yeah, I'm sure it will but it's just for temporary testing purposes. It's a glass cleanable filter like I typically put on my carburetted engines. I can run it for 1 tank of gas and inspect. If it's really bad I will add a different style mesh to the can and retest. It's very likely I'll never be able to catch all the oil just by changing mediums in the can but it's fun to test and doesn't cost anything.

Yes, the 17mm block plugs.

Cool, I wasn't clear on that. Haynes says one on each side of the block, and you may need to use a poker of some sort (book says Phillips screwdriver) to break a possible crust once you get the plug out. I think doing at least one of them would be worth it if they come out easily enough.
