Cargo Area

Are you kidding me, what kind of an engineer designs a cargo area that slants toward the tailgate? I bought a 2018 Tahoe about 2 months ago, and when the 3rd row is folded down, the cargo area pitches to the tailgate. So when we go to the grocery store, the bags slide toward the back and spill out when I open the tailgate. I should mention, this doesn't only happen with groceries, everything that is put back there slides toward the rear. I suppose I could buy a WeatherTech cargo liner that would probably help, but there are times I need to use the 3rd row, and I really don't feel like taking the liner in and out all the time. Plus, I am not always at home where I could put the liner in the garage when I need to use the third row, so now I would have the problem of what do I do with the liner now that I raised the seats. When I pointed the slant out to the dealer, I was told that it is normal. Is the dealer correct, is this normal, or has anyone had their dealer resolve this problem?

I also bought a 2018 tahoe and mine is this way too.

I removed the 3rd row and storage area and all is well. Sad that I spent the money for the 3rd row, but...

this is when I open the rear window and grab the stuff by the hatch first, then open the hatch, even if it's not pitched unless you hit the brakes real good before parking stuff will usually be thrown at the back hatch.

You guys don't have a factory cargo net, or the mounting points for one? I think that would stop the stuff from falling out when you pop the hatch open.

Never had this problem with my 2013 Tahoe.

My car came with a net that installs right at the hatch with mounting points on each side, I have a feeling that would stop your problem. I have a factory rubber mat, and that also keeps things from sliding.

Stuff slides underneath the cargo net. There is no way to secure the net at the bottom to keep things from sliding underneath it.

Put the stuff in the net. That's why it's shaped like a poutch.

I use a multi sectional grocery organizer which keeps bags from rolling around. Does not matter if it is the Suburban or a sedan, groceries in these plastic bags just move around or loose their contents on the ride home.

I'm not a "slow driver"... ...... So I got a medium duty - ratcheting cargo bar to hold stuff in place.

Yup same issue with my 17 Sub. I took out the wedge shaped floor compartment and that fixed the problem but then exposed the seat motors so I put it back in. Even with a weather tech cargo mat in the rear compartment crap still slides to the rear and falls out when you open the hatch. Some engineer needs his a$$ whipped for this lousy design.

I was looking at the rear cargo area of my '15 Yukon XL Denali and thought if there was a way to remove the wedge shaped compartment below the carpeted piece it would make the whole area much flatter, at least behind the 3rd row. And that cargo compartment thing is useless, it's like 3" deep WTF am I going to put in there?

Someone needs to come up with a flat insert that replaces the divided slanted cargo compartment insert and leaves it flat, so that the carpet just lays down lower and now flat.

Resurrection....

I got tired of the ‘ski slope’ so i yanked the stupid cargo tray, that doesn’t hold anything anyway, out.

My cargo mat fits perfectly, covers the holes in the carpet, runs up the back of the seat slightly covering the motors and wires and bottom of seat. I now have a FLAT cargo area, bonus is the 2-4” more height in the rear and nothing rolls to the rear, always open window first anyway.....

If i need to pick something up where i need a completely flat surface, even though its sloped, i can throw it back in or prop the rear of my cargo up by the hatch, or just use one of my trailers or the tahoe.

Stupid design imo but simple fix.

This is encouraging... I want to see what it looks like under your rear carpeted cargo mat. Got any pics of that?
Also what's involved in "yanking out" the cargo tray? Is it just some plastic clips, actual screws or what?

Will get you a pic tonight.

It is carpeted but there are holes in the carpet for the feet of the cargo tray.

If you open the lid of the tray, pull up the rubber mats that are in each front ‘compartment’ you will see two flat hand tigtened ‘bolts’ almost an inverted wing nut, spin them out and then lift and pull entire tray out.

If you don’t have a cargo mat however you will be able to see under and the motors and wires for the seats. Also, if you look at my pic again you also now see the ‘kid seat tethers’ molded into the back of the seat, where the tray had hindged flaps that fold and cover the tether points when seats in an up position...

ill get some more pictures tonight.

Even if I didn’t have a cargo mat, and i had to look at the wires, etc..I would still do it as the stupid slope annoys me.

My 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6 had a similar cargo tray to make a flat floor but the skirts to cover the rear seat hardware were attached to the seat backs and not the tray. I liked having it for storing a tire plug kit, jumper cables and other odds and ends like spare wireless headsets and batteries.
