Locked or Open Differentials?!?!?!

I'm going to replace the brakes on my tahoe because the current ones are toast but I can't figure out whether it has an open or locked differential. Can someone help me out?

Check the RPO codes on the inside of your glove box door, If you find the code G-80 you have a locker.

They're should be more. At least one for the ratio... Gt4 GU6 etc... You got a pic of the RPO sticker?

Turns out I need to know if it's limited slip. And I have a 2002 Tahoe 4WD

Jack up the rear in N and spin a wheel. See if the other wheel turns opposite or the same direction.

G80 is for locked I thought?

The Eaton G80 is unique in the fact that it is a limited slip differential that locks under certain conditions.


My understanding is if you don't have G80, then you're open. I don't know of any other options. @swathdiver? Jack up the rear and watch the wheels spin in opposite directions.

I looked up RPO G86 and it comes up as

G86 Axle Rear, Limited Slip.

On a few of the sites i saw discussing this they said that G86 was used in quadrasteer equipped pickups and they never knew it was available in a tahoe or yukon. Maybe it was possible to order one with that option or someone broke the glovebox door and replaced it with one from a truck. I would just pull the diff cover and remove all doubt as to what you have.

I was gonna ask where you got g86 from.... Lol.
G65 is suspension.
