What is supposed to go by the fender?

No. ppv and ssvs had them or guys that want more power for audio, plowing.remember tho, it shares Body style with pickups so they cone with heavier stuff, diesels, plow prep package.. etc. i put one in my 01 and 13 because i have a plow.

ok. I know my second GEN Dodge Ram has a spot on the fender for a second battery because of the diesel.

Has anyone put anything cool there besides a battery?

I have a tray, hold down, cables and a battery that pulled out of my last Tahoe before selling it...

that spot was originally used for a air injection pump that pumped air into the intake during the first 60 seconds or so this was to help idle during a cold start, it was basically useless so they eliminated it sometime during the 2001 model. my 2000 had one and it eventually leaked and caused check engine lights, pulled one out of a junk yard and it lasted until I sold it. now it is the battery compartment on the 2007+

I thought that was a California smog item?

Why do you say that? Vehicles and emissions parts legal for sale in California are different than for the rest of the US. They have to meet CARB (California Air Resources Board) standards which are way tougher than the rest of the states. But I'm sure you already knew that, right? Cars for sale in Cali have always had extra emissions crap added on and the catalytic converters, etc are different.

I would have to argue that most vehicles sold are California compliant, there may be some out there not compliant but it is a pita for some dealers the laws from state vary a lot, I have even purchased Canadian vehicles that were California compliant. I purchased my current one from Nevada and its California compliant.


GM cars and trucks sold for registration in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington State are required to meet California emission requirements. To meet these requirements, option code NE1 "CT/DE/ME/MD/MA/NJ/NY/OR/PA/RI/VT/WA EMISSIONS" should be ordered

Mine isn't. It doesn't have that RPO code and it doesn't say it's California compliant under the hood like required if it is. I'm in Oregon, but the truck was registered in Washington state when I bought it. But to get back to the original answer to the question posed, that spot has been empty in nearly all of the NBS vehicles except the ones that had a second battery option, and GM makes the battery tray that goes there. There's write-ups on it and the part number is 15246518 for the tray. Here's a picture of it.

ya the pump was only on the 2000 and some 2001 then they deleted it but ya its a perfect battery spot
