Getting Rid of 2016 Yukon Denali for 2009-2014 Tahoe LTZ

I had it with the 2016 Yukon Denali with all its issue (Booming/Buffeting at low speeds under 20mph) after switching from 2wd to Auto and etc.

So now I'm looking at 2009/14 Tahoe LTZ w/4wd and 2017/18 muscle car for the price of one Denali.

How are the Tahoe's during these years and which year is the best to purchase?

Calvin, you've selected the right range of years with the 6-speed transmissions. In 2012 GM put in the updated navigation system, 2010 on have USB charging ports. There are improvements to the Tow/Haul mode programming in those later years as well if that is important to you. 2012 the Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control became standard and in 2013 Powertrain Grade Braking in Normal Mode was added.

If you live in hot climes, the K5L enhanced cooling package might be important to you, as well as 3.42 gears (GU6) and maybe even the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (JL1) for more pep and convenience when towing.

If you don't care about fuel economy and a little more truck like ride, get a 2500. The suspension and running gear is twice as sturdy and there's no AFM. If you get a 1500, you can yourself or have someone physically remove the AFM system and get it tuned to make the engine near bullet proof. The last year for the 2500s was 2013. Look up Duraburb on youtube.

With your purchase, buy a Tech2, so you can quickly and accurately diagnose the truck throughout its service life with your family. The only caveat is that it's supposed to only work up until 2013 but I believe that these GMT900s kept the same computer system and interface in 2014, but not 100% on that. The MDI GDS2 software and a laptop is what replaced it for 2014-Current.

It's a shame that so many of the K2s are plagued with the problems you're experiencing. Please let us know when you find its replacement, both of them!

A few derpy replies here.....

2014 was the first year of K2XX. 2013 was the last year of GMT900.

Tahoes/Yukons aren't available as 2500s, only XLs and Suburbans. And the 2500 trucks are pretty rare and generally command higher prices. Only 5000 Suburban 2500s were made in 2008, the year mine was made. That being said, they are completely and totally bulletproof. Mine is up to 170k miles and is still flawlessly reliable with negligible repair costs over the last three years.

AFM scares the hell out of me. I'll buy other brands before I buy an AFM truck.

Have you tried working with the dealer to fix your 2016 Denali? It’s a shame how many issues these vehicles have. I hope they redesign them very soon and get past all of these huge quality problems with the current generation.

The look of the latest generation has really grown on me. But the litany of issues is a true deal breaker.

Thanks everyone for your advice and I'm still searching around for the Tahoe's. I took my 2016 Denali to the dealership more than 3x's already and the same issues keep coming up so the hell with the newer 15+ Denali's.

What model year did GM implement "Direct Injection" (DI) fueling?

That seems another risky, maintenance & repair nightmare. AFAIK very few have racked up enough miles to get a good database of DI reliability issues.

That's why I went with the 2013 LTZ burb. Only thing I don't like is the punny motor. But otherwise I love it.

You could get a 6th gen BBC crate engine. Mine is the opposite of puny with 502ci/8.2L. Has a holley TBI and 1st gen GM ECU. I managed 15mpg hauling a double axle trailer with a Camaro on it. It still gets 15mpg without the trailer however. It's like the engine says "I was hauling something 4000 miles just now?...oh, didn't notice"

We own a 2010 Tahoe LT that's been an absolute dream to own. Really no problems to speak of. Much happier with this hooptie than we were with our 2008 GMC Acadia.

Gen V engines came out in 2014 for pickups and SUVs in 2015.

I'm definitely researching these last generations trucks from GM.

Which truck is reliable and less cost of maintenance to own?

2010-2014

Escalade, Tahoe LTZ/Z71 or Yukon Denali?

I really don't know which vehicle to choose I do like the 6.2 motors.
