Suburban all the way. Had many of them growing up. 3 boys on road trips and camping everywhere was worth the room then and the same thing with 2 kids of my own and the wife can fill that thing like a storage unit. The LWB for ride and extra cargo room is worth it all day long. My .02.

My wife and I had to drive from NY to Florida for a friend's wedding in February, over 1400 miles each way, plus over 300 miles running around for the 3 days we were there. Because I had a larger vehicle, I was able run around and pick up everything the wedding coordinator "forgot" to have delivered, and afterwards, drive half the drunken wedding party back to the hotel.
For the 3200+ mile round trip, I averaged over 16MPG, spending just over $500 in gas. Plane tickets would have cost over $1300. Granted, it took us 4 days of driving vs 2 flights of 3-4 hrs each, but we were very comfortable in the Yukon XL, able to sprawl out while the other drove.
And, as far as a daily... I'm a contractor, I like the ability to load pretty much anything I need, and be able to close the hatch up in bad weather. My wife has an Expedition, but I moved the 2nd row seats back in my XL, I have more room in the rear than pretty much anyone else.... and it helps, because my 15 yr old son is 6'3 and 360 lbs, while my 13 yr old daughter is 6' tall.... if they were closer together for more than 5 minutes, I'd be stopping at Urgent Care for trauma wounds every time we rode.....
