There is a Front Underbody Bracket on driver and passenger side of front frame. What is it for and how does it work?

GMPartsOnline says "Helps align and secure various components". There's just one hole in the bracket and nothing around it. Is it using friction against frame to hold something above? Why the 3d shape compared to a plate, if that's all it's doing?

being it has never came up before in discussion that I am aware of I think it is something used during assembly, perhaps to push it down the line correctly.

I thought someone mentioned it was to keep you from driving over another vehicle in an accident.. Not sure how that little bracket will help much in that instance..?
