I found a vehicle for sale that is a 95 and has a 6.5 turbo diesel. Are those engines any good?

they can be problematic if it has been subject to improper maintenance, and being ran too hard.
If cared for properly by the previous owner(s) they can be good engines.

it's not a powerhouse, it won't be fast but it will get you to where you want no matter what :p

but it all depends, you can get lucky an really unlucky..

Again they are not as bad as everyone thinks they are. yes they have issues like any other engine. but around 1994 they had redesigned their injection system and a few years later they made very good improvements to the cooling system that gain more 70% of flow thru the block using higher flowing pump and dual thermostats. And the new replacement engines or block/head parts only get better with changes in the alloys used. But as Gekko said it is not a tire burner. With following the maintenance servicing and not overloading it You can do a lot of mileage on them. Like any other vehicle you can get a rundown one but it should not keep you from getting one. Oil analysis of the engine can tell you when something may be going south.

I would get one why? It's diesel! Some have problems but it's not something that can't be fixed. I almost got a dually quad cab 6.5 but it had bad heads.. Hell my buddy has one at the shop that has bad heads. May get it from him and haul stuff.

I bought the vehicle and the kid told me that the PMD might need to be changed soon. It would shut off on him randomly but would start. After about three weeks now it has shut off on me numerous times and would take like twenty minutes before I could get the thing started and stay running until it would shut off on me again. The service engine light comes on periodically and sometimes stays on for a couple of days. The last time it did this I jumped out the obd and the codes that were shown are 23 iat, 62 transaxle gear switch signal, 65 right bank O2 rich exhaust and 78 turbo wastegate solenoid fault. Yesterday I drove it a little bit and after twenty minutes of it being parked I tried to start it to move and it wouldn't start. I got it to start twice today but it shuts off right away. It cranks over but doesn't seem like it is getting any fuel. The codes that popped today are 44 Egr pulse width, 45 Egr vent error, 49 service throttle signal lamp circuit, 57 Pcm 5 voltage shortage and 62 turbo boost circuit sensor low. I am not sure where to go from this point in figure out what is wrong short of replacing the PMD. A previous owner and relocated by cutting out the top of the relay box and mounting it on there and cutting holes in the side for an attempt of air flow.

Will do. Does it matter that the second battery isn't hooked up? I was thinking that the wiring that this guy did for the relocation might be bad. He draped it across the top of the engine under the intake tube. If they got to hot they might be weak and broken. Any way to test it?

Hey Sun do you have a schematic you can toss my way? Going to trace the wires. Also with the housing on the relay box cut up I don't know what the relays are inside.

second battery should not matter. you can run continuity test on any wire you want as long as there is no power on it. Pm me your email address and I will send when I can.

Update:

Traced the wires and didn't see any corrosion or broken wires. Pulled the PCM off and checked all connectors and everything was fine. After having my minivan hooked up to it, I got it started and it ran for about a minute and then would shut off. Did this a couple of times. I then swapped some side terminals around cause I had to hook one leg to a top terminal adapter being that I am short a side terminal bolt. Jumped it and it ran for 5-7 minutes and shut off. It would start right back up and bucked real quick like the fuel was cut off and went back to running. About 5 minutes later it would shut off. Started it and ran it with the RPMs up and it shut off after about 5 minutes. I checked the PMD and it was burning hot.

I sent you one sheet to start with follow it thru as best as you can and let me know where you end up. Also I sent a tsb that may apply to you in case you just want to take a random shot at the issue.

Thanks I got them. I bought a new pmd and relocation kit, had to cut the motor side plug off cause it came as a 6 pin not the 4 pin my motor had, soldered and heat shrunk the wires. Attached the heat sink using the heat transfer pad instead of the thermal grease then wire tied to house inside the engine compartment and it has been working fine since. The only thing I notice now is that when it's cold, it will have that weird bucking like an intermittent fuel problem. Was thinking that it was a cold air issue since there is no filter or box on it.
