Hello everyone.

I am researching the Duramax delete system for my diesel truck and would like to understand the real-world implications before considering any modifications.

Some owners claim improved performance, fuel economy, and reduced maintenance after removing emissions equipment, while others warn about reliability issues, warranty loss, and legal consequences.

I am especially interested in whether such modifications are legal in different regions and how they affect long-term engine health. Are there safer, compliant alternatives that provide similar performance gains without compromising emissions systems?

Any firsthand experiences or technical explanations would be greatly appreciated from those familiar with Duramax diesel platforms.

I can't give you any meaningful assistance, since I don't have any diesel familiarity.

By coincidence, this morning I was talking with a contractor, and during our discussion, he stated that he had deactivated his DEF about 5 years ago, and has been running without it ever since.

I would love to do this delete early, but unless my local dealer will honor the factory warranty with it deleted, I will likely just wait until the warranty period is over (unless it's a constant source of issue - then I will just delete immediately).

a lot of this is going to depend on where youre at, if you still need to do emissions every year. legality, i dont really see getting roadside inspection on a 1/2 ton truck/suv, so as long as you havent intentionally tuned in some coal rolling tune, doubtful any kind of enforcement would look twice.

for me the only maintenance i see getting rid of is dumping def in it.
mpg gains... without having to do regens - overall average may be a little better but i dont think gm left much on the table to gain mpg wise, its still a brick
improved performance - definitely with a tune

however the cost of deleting the dpf and def, bypassing the canbus for the modules, unlocking the ecm/tcm... for an extra 2-3mpg youll never break even.

now with all that said.... im coming up on 85k on my LM2 and was thinking of trading it in for a newer truck/suv, but given the current state of how LZ0s have been taking a beating - i am just going to hold onto it for a while, as long as the def/dpf dont have problems i dont really care about dumping def in it every other month. if either fails i dont plan on replacing them i will just delete/tune it. i know the history of it

Agreed that adding DEF is not particularly inconvenient but failure of the buggy supervisory systems surrounding emissions control is. Especially when it results in “Limp Mode”.

It's sad that we would think that 85K on a vehicle means that it's time to trade it in especially one with a Duramax. I mean if you can afford a new one hey that's great! But 85K on a diesel engine is really just getting fully broken in. I also don't see a lot of LZ0's "taking a beating". There certainly are some bearing issues out there and maybe a few emissions problems, but the vast number of people on forums here and on other platforms, the forums are mostly dead and/or are complaining about transmission issues mainly... nothing to do with the engine itself....
