I know that starters are pretty plentiful as far as availability, but I was wondering if there was a rebuild kit available for them.

If not, what is the best brand to go with?

I haven't been able to take the starter out, but I suspect the solenoid died, as the starter will spin when the key is put into the start position, but the Bendix isn't kicking the gear out to engage the fly wheel.

2001/4.8/Auto/2wd with 163k.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

"some" places although rare do still repair starters, try a farm equipment repair shop or small engine shop.
you could probably replace the solenoid if you can identify the exact same one, there are tons of solenoids out there all types

Plenty of places sell rebuild kits online. I don't have any experience with any of them, but Google "starter and alternator rebuild parts" and have at it. Read third party reviews, etc.

Dude......your time and sanity is worth more.....

NEVER buy a reman in today's market. The $20 or 50 savings isn't worth the headache. Buy a new reputable aftermarket or OEM and call it a day. Its a 30 minute job.....why make it painful?

ive got a local starter and alternator rebuilder, charges 1/2 what a parts store wants, for a rebuilt item. if they dont have one like yours on the shelf, they can rebuild it in less then a hr. love that place.

that being said back in the day i have changed a solenoid or 10. pretty simple job. 15 dollar part back then too, that the parts stores all had in stock. you'd likely be buying one on line today.

Was very common in the 80s and back to have a local starter/alternator/radiator repair shop or 2. It was also very economical to get your stuff fixed at these shops. Now most places no longer have these type of shops around anymore. Id get a rebuilt unit with a warranty from rockauto or local auto parts store.
