Squeaking noise on startup (2011 Burb)

Just wondering if anyone has had this happen. On very humid or cold/damp days the truck squeaks for a few minutes before it's warmed up. This does not happen on dry or warm days.

Truck is all original and only has 72K on the clock.


Any ideas? Belt? Pulley?

FWIW, my neighbor has a Silverado (similar year)that does the same thing.

My guess would be an idler pulley or something related to the belts or perhaps the belts themselves.

Very likely a belt or pulley. Spray water on it while it's squealing. If the noise goes away, it's most likely the belt. Fortunately the belts on these engines are pretty easy to remove and replace (and not too pricey), just make sure you have a picture of the routing. While it's off, jiggle and spin all the pulleys to check for play. Tensioner is usually first to go.


I had the same issue, chased it for a bit, and it turned out to be that the alternator pulley was misaligned with the rest, causing one side of the belt to rub and squeal. Alternator bolts tightened up to torque spec, moved it back no more than 1-2mm, and it hasn't squealed since.

Belt squeals when damp out, common. Take a small piece of sandpaper and while truck is running carefully reach in between pulleys underside of belt and 'sand' the belt... be careful, no longsleeves and lightly push on belt from underneath and noise will go away, if still there get a new belt.
