Geez.
So this guy asks me if I got time to replace an engine in his 1999 truck. Says the replacement engine is already in the back of the truck ready to go. Make an easy 500 bucks......The truck gets towed to my house......I look at the engine. I see the intake manifold is broken, the transmission bell housing is busted off with pieces remaining on the engine block....one exhaust manifold is busted, the fan is destroyed, the oil pan is cracked. Oil dipstick is bent in all kinds of crazy directions. The metal portion of the EGR tubes are bent.......what the heck.

I ask him who took the engine out of the other truck. He says he lifted it out with his PG&E telephone pole boomtruck. Man, thats one powerful hoist.

I should have taken some pics, but I didn't.

I've already got the bad engine out of the truck. The engine had seized due to over heating. When the owner told me that he blew up the engine and asked me to replace it, I didn't ask him what exactly was the problem with the motor. we agreed on a price of $500. However he didn't tell me that the engine was locked up.

The engine being locked up will not allow access to the torque converter bolts...........this COMPLICATES things tremendously because the converter will have to come out WITH the engine!!!!!!!!!

I called him and explained the situation and told him I wont be able to have his truck running for a couple days (because I have to figure out a strategy for getting the engine to separate from the transmission.

Do I pull the transfer case and then the transmission and then the motor? Do I pull the transmission and X case out while still bolted to the motor?

It was a learning experience. This is what I did:
I unbolted all the bell housing bolts and slid the engine forward to remove it.

Easier said than done!!!!

First I removed the intake manifold to gain access to the top 3 trans/motor bolts. Then I removed both exhaust manifold heat shields, then the exhaust manifolds themselves. Then unbolted the motor mounts from the engine. Then removed the motor mounts from the frame brackets. I also removed the water pump, and both engine accessory mount brackets from the front of the motor........pretty much stripped the motor down.

But the dang thing still wouldn't come out. It was free of the transmission. After studying the situation further, I saw that either the oil pan and oil pick up tube would have to be removed OR the front differential would have to be removed. I chose to tackle the front differential. Once I removed the bolts (which secure the differential to the vehicle) it dropped down a couple inches, and as luck would have it, the engine was able to squeeze thru.....up and out of the engine bay.

I don't think it would have came out had I not removed all the pieces mentioned earlier due to the fact that I had to tilt the engine up at an extreme angle. I don't know what the angle was that the engine was tipped back, but I know I lifted it with my hoist chains bolted onto the front of the cylinder heads. Once the engine was more near the radiator, I was able to set it down and relocate the chains to a more appropriate locations on the engine.

I kept the owner informed of what all was going on and apologized for not having his truck finished in one day as was our agreement. He told me to take my time and do it right, then he hands me another $500 hundred dollars. He then told me that the shop wanted $1,300 to replace the engine. He towed it over there and they said with the engine being seized, the price would be closer to $2000 because they would have to remove the transfer case and transmission.

If I ever run into this situation again, I'm going to do the same thing.......only next time I wont be scratching my head about what to do first.

So he gave you $1,000 total?
Yes....he gave me a total of $1,000

Funny thing though............on the day I finished his truck, I drove it to his house, saw a wrecked BMW (with front end damage) parked in his garage. The BMW looked really dusty. I ask him if it would still run. I ask if he might be willing to sell it and I also ask if it is on "Non-Op" status with the DMV.

He tells me it will run, but needs a battery. He says he's willing to sell it. He says it's not on Non-Op status because the registration doesn't expire until February 2017.

So I check out the BMW. He tells me that the radiator core support is bent and not repairable. I ask him how much would it take for him to let it go. He looks at me with a big smile on his face and says, "gimme back that thousand dollars".

So I give him back the money he paid me to install his truck engine and now I own the BMW.

I get the car home, planning on just using it as a parts car. I remove all the damaged pieces.......the core support is destroyed and (just as he said, it) is definately NOT repairable............but (to my surprise) it CAN be replaced!!!!!!!!!!. Once I got the broken lights and bumper (and a few other things) off the car, I removed 10 more bolts and the core support came right off the car.

I called a BMW parts recycler (90 miles away) and ordered a 2005 bumper, fender and hood in "stahlgrau" metallic grey which is the correct color for this car.......I told the recyclers I want the cleanest parts they have in thier inventory. And I'll pay courier service to deliver the body parts to my house. Total cost of parts: $336 delivered. Arrival time 7-10 business days. I figure I can piece the car together locally as time/money permits.

Wife says she desperately needs the car for around town, claiming her car (2010 Caravan) is a "gas hog".
My 17 year old daughter wants the car because her 1999 VW Jetta is "ugly and it's a joke at school".
My 16 year old son wants the car claiming that he's "becoming a man" and is "ready for the responsibility".

Fortunately, for me, the car has a manual transmission and none of them can drive stick. Looks like I'll be able to sell the car without getting the cold shoulder.

No....I don't want to keep it......I already have a really nice blue BMW coupe with manual transmission. Here's a picture of it on my trailer........I hit a pothole driving 60mph and blew out both tires on the passenger side.

Sounds like an awesome deal in the end. I wish I had a boom truck to pull motors instead of my $150 Harbor Freight cherry picker. Thanks for the reminder of all the trouble I'm going to have pulling the locked up engine in my Caprice PPV.

The purple car in this old photo is gonna be his once he get's his drivers license......(but he hasn't made any progress towards that happening yet). The car is a wx3 Impala. This picture is atleast 2 years old. The car has been parked on the side of my house for the past year and a half. Interior is thrashed, paint oxidized and where it isn't oxidized, the clear coat is peeling needs cats to pass smog inspection. Has two flat tires. A real Gem. Daughter used to drive it when she first got her driving learners permit. The thing is virtually indestructible, but proved to be too powerful for her inexperience of driving. On 3 separate occasions she spun the car while getting on the freeway....you know like, accelerating speed to match freeway speed, transmission downshifts while rounding the onramp curve and traction breaks loose. Ass end comes around. Overpowered dinosaur. (sounds BADASS though, Sanderson headers, dual Flowmasters, an X pipe, no catalytic converters). After she spun the car the third time, The Wife went out and bought her a base model Jetta with 2.0 engine/auto trans. Impala has been parked ever since and placed on NonOp status with DMV.
