Smell Fuel

I don't know whats going on with my Tahoe, I sometimes smell fuel near my drivers door. I have no visible leaks and smell is not always there and it's starting to drive me crazy. Anybody had a problem like this before and know how to fix it? Thanks.

Check to make sure your fuel filter is tight. It is on the inside of the frame just about under the drivers door.

Hey Green Monster, I to am from TO and I had the same fuel smell two years ago on my 95 2 door. The smell came and went and it did not matter when I filled up just started happening. I looked and looked and then I finally found the problem after about 6 months. Take a look at the fuel tank on the sides and see if you can notice a wash effect. I had a bad sending unit so to speak, the lines on the sender were corroded and then the return line went completely. The fuel would leak occasionaly and pool on top of the tank as it got worse it finally washed down over the sides and collected in the skid plate. Dropped the tank and replaced everything and all is good.

Check there if it is only happening occasionaly and with our salty winters you know the lines are rusting.

Well thanks for the replies, it's a nice day in TO so i gonna check the filter tightness and look for tank wash.

Well I found the problem, our wonderful Canadian winters has gotten to the fuel lines. 1 of the lines ( i think return) looks really rusty and damp. So looks like I'll be dropping the tank and replacing the lines.

Well yesterday I went shopping for fuel line, the guy at the store offered me the regular steel line or nylon line. The nylon line sounds interesting, has anybody used it before?

I was going to ask if it does it when you fill up, maybe you should check the charcoal canister but sounds like you're on to something!

I am not sure about the lines. A friend of mine had a 95 RCSB and he tried to make fuel lines but could never get them leak free and just went to the stealership for them. From his explanation I have hoped and prayed I did not have to replace line. Can't see why he had a problem as he is a certified mechanic as well.

Honestly if I'm goign thru running new lines I'm goign to do a braided steel line or something similar ...

99 Tahoe Sport auto 4x4

I just bought this 99 2 door. When I filled it up and was on the freeway, i smelled a hint of gas through the vents. Didn't pay it any attention, regular California smog. When I park it in my garage from time to time I smell gas on the driver side like in front of the rear tire. Guy I bought it from said it has a new fuel filter on it. HELLLP

wow way to bring back almost a year old thread... check your lines starting at the intake and follow them all the way back checking for leaks.. do everything mentioned in previous posts
