Step 1: if you want to diagnose it get a code reader on it that will read the code(s).
Transfer case encoder motor sensor is usually the problem. You will need a scanner that can read chassis, tcase codes as most basic low buck code readers don’t have the capability.
Check the wiring to the tcase motor assembly as it can get frayed and cause that message to flash. Otherwise the sensor is inside the assembly and needs to come off to replace it.
