How often do you service the transmission (fluid & filter) ?

Manual says 45k for severe service. I have a 2023 and it gets mainly driven around town and tires a pontoon 2-3 times per year.

Dealer wants $968!

I had it done on my 2021 when we purchased it. had around 62,000 miles on it. Cost me $250 by a reputable Transmission shop. Pan service, drop pan & drain fluid, replace filter, new pan gasket, top off fluid and level check. Just rolled over 70k miles now and its been flawless.

Did mine at 42000, drop pan, change filter, replace pan gasket and refill. Feel like it was $425 all in. Can’t recall, did front and rear diff and xfer case at same service, plus oil and filter.

Something doesn’t add up. How does the service cost $1200 everywhere I’ve been quoted. You sure you have a 21+ with exhaust in the way?

Anyone around Nashville TN getting it that cheap?

Relax, your estimate is in line for a pan drop and fluid change at a dealership. Save some money and go to a good independent transmission shop.

AI says:

Cost Breakdown by Service Type

Service TypeIndependent ShopDealershipWhat it Includes
Fluid Flush / Exchange$300 – $500$500 – $700Machine flushes old fluid out and hooks up new fluid. Does not change the filter.
Pan Drop & Filter Change$550 – $850$1,000 – $1,250Mechanic removes the pan, replaces the physical internal filter, installs a new gasket, and adds fresh fluid.

I've used the same transmission shop to service 8 speed trucks, and now my 10 speed. The service on my Yukon was $250, and was the same price on the 8 speeds I've had servcied there.

However, I also had them do a service on my 2024 Silverado 2500HD 10L1000.....that was $850.

Do they not "not" recommend flushes per se and just fluid drains and refills? I have heard that actually flushing fluid through it may do more harm than good.....

We did the fluid exchange using BG equipment at the Ford and Lincoln dealers I was at. I don't recall any sort of recurring issues. Let it run til the fluid is nice and pink.
Dropping the pan leaves old fluid in the trans (torque converter, cooler and lines). Yes, the filter is not changed but it will get cleaned some from the fresh fluid getting run through it. But, no breaking the original pan seal and hoping it gets properly sealed after.

I had a 2016 Hoe that I bought new and never serviced the transmission. The transmission permanently crapped out at $120k. I don’t do severe driving or accelerate hard, and rarely tow anything more than a small trailer for moving something like a sofa.

I bought my 2021 new also and had the transmission serviced at about 50k miles in late 2023 and it was about $250 at a very reputable transmission shop. Then, I had them service it again this year at 100k miles and it was about $450 because they said the parts had significantly gone up.

I have 115k on it now and no problems.

Checked the records today. It was $749.95+tax and shop supplies at my GMC Dealership for Drop Pan, replace filter, replace fluid, replace pan gasket.

(It was the 4WD Service that was $445: Front and Rear Diff, plus transfer case fluid exchanges)

Fun little trani project. I have 13,000 on my tahoe 3.0. Don’t want to wait till 45,000 to see the color of the oil and don’t want to do a pan drop and filter change now. Used a suck up that I use for ski boat oil change and was able to get 3 qts out of the fill hole. Put 3 back in with a $25 Amazon fill bottle. Maybe do that another time or two before the 45,000 filter change. Freshen the oil incrementally.

When I had the service done on my 21, they told me absolutely do not do a flush on the 10 speed trans, the only time something like that need done is if the whole thing needs rebuilt.
