Secondary Air system not working

Since this is broke and has been for awhile is it ok to just pull it out and plug hoses or try and fix it? I haven't noticed any problems other than the service engine light. I just had to replace the power steering pump and figured since I was messing around in there may check on it. I would really like to put a second battery in the spot the air pump is using.
