It was happening here in Colorado a few years ago. RA didn't have a taxing agreement with certain municipalities so they wouldn't ship to most incorporated areas. That's since been rectified.

Prior to the cure they wouldn't ship to my house, but would to my son's place, which was out in the county.

I remember it was a big fight when Amazon had to start charging and paying sales tax, too.

Here in the People's Republic of Colorado the legislature has created a law that requires a $0.28 "delivery fee" that is assessed to each package that is physically delivered.

A tax by any other name is a tax, unless the Colorado Supreme Court decides it's not.

Shoot, you should see my vehicle registrations.
Thirty-six bucks in fees added to a fifty-five dollar motorbike registration. Fifteen bucks fee to park in state parks (that used to be free to us seniors), another fifteen to support clean air and six bucks for Motorcycle Education that had never been extended to me over the past fifty-four years on the road. Taxes by another name.

Woops. Renewed one registration today. Park fee jumped to $24. I thought I had the cost figured out and Surprise!

Rock Auto once send me the wrong rotor. I called them and they made me prove it was the wrong rotor with photos.
They immediately sent me the right rotor at no charge and didn’t require that I send the wrong rotor back.
I was satisfied.

Thanks for the heads up. I never do business with a company I cannot speak to on the telephone. When dealing with a new organization, I always call them first as a Test.
I think you are categorizing rockauto as some fly by night website where they sell things at unbelievably low prices and just steal your payment info when a order is placed.....
clearly not the case here.

I don't like dealing with companies, even good ones, where I can't interact with humans; and 'in person' is better than 'by phone'.

Absolutely true. My shop uses them all the time. They have wallpapered every available metal surface in their shop with Rock Auto's magnetic stickers.

in a perfect world this is ideal, but ever since computers came along and even magazine ad's before that trade & commerce has changed, even in the last few years my online purchasing has increased exponentially simply because of availability and better price. When a alternator is $599 down the street and the same exact thing is $303.00 online I am not a fool..... I kinda like having money in my pocket.
a emergency need is of course different, but I nipped that in the butt by having more than 1 running vehicle at all times

I've used Rock Auto for years, and I have not had a single issue with them. Maybe, I've been lucky, but probably not. I believe that they are a GOOD company, but like all companies, they employ humans (at least so far), and humans make mistakes.
Its after a mistake is made, that tells you everything about a company. Sadly, customer service has left the planet in the majority of businesses these days. I'll stick with a company if they honestly try and correct an error. In my last purchase from R/A, sorry to say, I got screwed and customer service was AWOL.... so they are not my first "go to" anymore.

In person sometimes leaves me wishing I hadn't realized how stupid some people are.
I took an odd crush washer from a 50 year old vehicle to a very big name auto parts store to match something up. It was all I could do to get the kid (the only clerk) off his phone only to be told if the vehicle was not in his computer then he couldn't do anything.
I left and have never been back.

While I believe the "kids these days only know how to scroll on their phone" trope has a lot of validity, the most incompetence I've ever had at auto parts stores and hardware stores have been from Boomers and Gen X'ers (I'm Gen X, FWIW). A few examples...

* Installing a manual transmission in my '57 Chevy, needed a clutch arm boot for the bellhousing. The only guy at the dealership was a Boomer, claimed he didn't know what one was, then couldn't find it without a VIN or exact year/make/model, and then when I found the active P/N for him in the diagram, claimed it couldn't be ordered (it could, and I did via the internet).

* Looking for a crow's foot, a Gen X'er dude at a hardware store chuckled at me and said "there's no such tool." Went down the road to another hardware store and an ~18-yo knew what it was and took me right to them.

* Looking for some naval jelly at a hardware store, a Boomer woman claimed they had no such thing and she didn't know what it was anyhow. I changed my request and asked for "anti-rust treatment," and when she took me to the shelf, I pointed out the naval jelly right there.

* Looking for a J-nut at a hardware store, a Boomer woman said they didn't have any. I pulled a picture up and said "Do you have these, then?" "Yes." Took me to them, then I pointed out the name on the drawer.

* Probably at least a half-dozen more similar Gen X & Boomer "I don't know what that is"/"those don't exist"/"we don't have those" stories that I can't recall at the moment.
On the other hand, like the crow's foot example from above, I've found folks in their late teens or early 20s to be the most competent at hardware stores these days. They know what parts are, where they are, and in the case of a plumbing issue I had, pointed out a far better solution. They're also willing to tell me where I can get something they don't have, which is a rarity for Gen X & Boomer folks at stores.

Nowadays, I have a folder on my phone with pictures of what I'm looking for, so I'm ready for the "I don't know what that is"/"those don't exist"/"we don't have those" Gen X & Boomer types. :p This technique has worked well for me!

No Luxury Tax?
I'm convinced that's why the state and towns jumped on board here. Many towns adamantly resisted, at first, but when it was noticed that people were crossing the state border and spending their money there things seemed to change. Funny how money changes attitudes.
