Replaced Head Gasket/Won't start

1999 Tahoe 5.7 Vortex, replaced Head gasket/manifold gasket. On reassembly placed #1 to tdc installed distributor with marks lined up. Finished assembly after, try starting won't start, engine turns over additional 2 times after cranking. Is this a timing issue, or possibly issue with valves not adjusted right? Or something completely different, any comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks

i would say timing issue then
that motor has hydraulic lifters to no valve adjustment needs to be done just make sure the rocker arm bolts are all torqued to 22lbs

Most likely a timing issue. Put #1 at ~20BTDC on the compression stroke and stab the distributer. Put a mark on the bottom side of the distributer lined up with the #1 plug wire. When you stab the distributer line the rotor up with the mark you made. It should fire right up.

No. 1 @ TDC "on the compression stroke" is key here. If you are 180 degrees out, then you'll definitely have starting problems.

Will, pull distributer and retry. As far as rocker arms us it 22lbs on the rocker arm bolts? I've read both 22lbs then most say find zero on push rods, then 1 full turn. Was thinking the 22 was for the rocker arm studs not for the nut on top?

I also went and picked up a compression tester so will go ahead and check each cylinder while I'm at it

Nevermind, figured it out 20 degrees before TDC, stab distrib in order to create a mark on the bottom to align properly. So my question to that is will that not damage the tab for the oil pump? Or is it far enough below to not make contact?

Make the mark just below the cap under whatever terminal you're using as #1. Then pull the cap off when you stab it so you can rotate the distributer until the rotor is lined up with your mark.

Make sure after you stab it to rotate the motor until the distributer seats on the oil pump driveshaft and drops all the way in. Don't try to tighten down the distributer if it's sticking up above the manifold, it's most likely not seated on the driveshaft and you'll bend it.

Got er going, I was about 1 tooth off, fired right up. Thanks for the help. Now x fingers for no leaks!

And by the way incase anyone else happens to see this post looking for info. My mistake was that the #2 terminal on the inside actually comes all the way across and lines up with #1 port, and the number 1 runs down clockwise of the port. So #2 was firing instead of #1. Rookie mistake!

a valve adjustment is required because it gets out of adjustment the moment you start to remove the rocker arm NUTS to remove the rods to remove the....
