Depends on how big the hard drive is. For example I think I read that my Kenwood DDX514 only supports a 32 GB hard drive. Does your Avic have a usb port on it?

Not sure about your headunit.. but i know on alot of pioneers you cant run a harddrive to do video.. only music.. you have to run a video player like a video ipod or a harddrive with an on board video player to us it for video

Head over to AVIC411.com. You CAN run a hard drive, but there are two general caveats:
1 - Hard drive either has to be small enough to be self-powered, or you'll need to power the drive somehow (i.e., converter to plug it into)
2 - the larger the drive, the longer your boot time will be.

Truthfully, IIRC you're better off getting an iPod for all the trouble it was worth to get a big drive to work properly.

Why do you hook it up and disconect it.. there are self charging cables for it so you never have to take it out

Yeah video off HD has been very suspect. I think you'd get better results off the SD card for video.
I got an older iPod Video for under $60 off eBay, 2 year warranty on it through Square Trade was $10. Worth looking at instead of a HD if you want to do video.
But seriously, AVIC411 will have better answers than here will.
